Song Review: Bob Dylan - “Masters of War” (The Avener Rework)
Imagine Nancy Kerrigan wailing, “Why?, why?, why?” after Tonya Harding’s thugs clubbed her kneecap and you’ll have an image of Sound Bites listening to Avener’s remix of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War.”
What caused the French techno producer to think it’d be cool to futz with Dylan’s perfectly constructed anti-war song from 1963 is anyone’s guess. But it seems reasonable to assume bad drugs were involved.
”Masters of War” has stood the test of time and remained wholly relevant for 55 years, so why fuck with it now?
It’s not that Dylan’s masterpiece is untouchable; Joan Osborne did a riveting remake on her 2017 Songs of Bob Dylan LP and the results were astounding. It’s just that this distasteful mucking around sucks - and borders on the sacrilege.
As a wise man named Zimmerman once sang: Even Jesus would never forgive what you do.
The remix - *ahem,* rework - starts off not terrible, as Avener adds but a single, pounding drum.
But then comes the pulsating house beat and swirling electronica that’ll cause even the most open-minded listener to immediately close up as Dylan’s guitar and vocal are forced into the background and the song takes on a party atmosphere.
Why?
Why!?
WHY!?!?!?
If anyone knows the answer, you can find Sound Bites curled up in a fallout shelter listening to The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and trying to erase this scourge from his musical memory.
