Post-TWS is where I almost gave up on the show entirely because I was so angry with the writing. It does get better, but they make some really stupid choices on the show.

AoS makes me so sad like, there's so much potential and then SO MUCH WHY. S2 has been better but even now I'm not fully caught up
So one thing that some of us were chatting about on IRC the other day was that we love stories and characters with moral ambiguity, but the problem with AoS is that the show doesn't seem aware that what it's presenting is morally ambiguous. We're supposed to blindly go on under the simplistic belief that there's such thing as a "good person" who can be trusted with ultimate authority to act without any kind of oversight. And that Coulson and co. qualify.
Like I said, this is Tony Stark levels of exceptionalist vigilante bullshit.

Thing is, I think it's perfectly in keeping with Coulson's character for him to believe all this stuff. That near-hysterical ourburst he has in the snow towards the end of 1x18? Makes perfect sense! Of course Coulson believes that "The world needs us!" and "We are not agents of nothing. We are agents of SHIELD!"
Buuuuut then what happens next? Coulson was right all along! The secret base is there! Fury is alive! The world does need agents of SHIELD!
Sigh.
