Hi! I was wondering if you could talk a bit about Agamotto? I have a lot of the comics but not the ones where he is really talked about. I don’t really have a specific thing I want to know about him, but general info would be cool! If not then that’s cool too. Thanks!
Greetings and thanks for asking!
Alright, this one is a bit hard. Agamotto is important as a part of the Vishanti, but there’s very little about his life. I don’t think there’s much content about him, but from time to time we are able to see a little bit about him and his deeds.
Previous life:You can read about his prehistoric life in New Avengers v8 (2018). The narrative shows us a little bit about the first team of Avengers, led by Odin. The run is currently ongoing, which means that we still can get more information about them. But I’m not really certain considering where the plot is heading to.
There’s also his earlier times when he was Oshtur’s apprentice and later fought Dormammu, becoming the first Sorcerer Supreme. BUT this is not really a comic, it’s a guide book about magic in Marvel universe. You can read about him in Vishanti’s chapter and War of the Seven Spheres’ chapter, if I’m not mistaken.
Modern days (minor appearances):
There are two Vishanti’s appearances that I really like. The first is when Stephen is learning about Shuma Gorath and has to deal with all his minions. They somehow managed to give Stephen strength to overcome his enemies. It begins with Marvel Premiere #3 (1972), but this story is very long. They only appear in issue #5. Agamotto is the lion (the coolest in my opinion).
The second appearance happens in Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (1989). I always recommend this story because it’s one of my favorites and it also shows how Stephen became the Sorcerer Supreme. Vishanti itself blesses him with the title.
Modern Days (major appearances)
He first appeared as a caterpillar back in Doctor Strange v2 #1 (1974), when Stephen was dragged into the Orb of Agamotto. I didn’t pay any attention to the caterpillar because it’s never said it was Agamotto himself, and to be honest the story is basically a trip on drugs with all the Alice in Wonderland background. But then, later, he appeared as a caterpillar once more in Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #7 (1989), and this time it was really awful for he acted like a spoiled brat. I pretend this issue never happened.
There’s also another plot that I really dislike and pretend it’s not Agamotto. In New Avengers v2 (2010), Stephen is looking for a new Sorcerer Supreme for, guess what, he considers himself unworthy. But Agamotto is very unpleasent at the recent events and simply decided to lead a demon invasion on Earth. Also he possessed Luke Cage and was responsible for Jericho Drumm’s death, whom sacrified himself to kill Agamotto. *sighs* (I see your bad plotting, Bendis)
Well, you can’t quite kill an entity, so Agamotto, along with the Vishanti, still exists, as if this plot never happened.
Finally, after Empirikul arc (Doctor Strange v4 #1-10, this is a must read!!!), most of Earth’s magic is gone. It’s slowly growing again but Stephen is having a hard time to use magic. Hence, he’s not conjuring the power of the Vishanti or Agamotto as he used to (which is lame).
I’m sorry if there’s little content about him. This is all I could remember. Thanks for dropping an ask and have a great day!
