Rio and Shark, 11
11. In search of sea life.
It’s vast and murky. It goes on forever. In fact, it COULD go on forever, since no one has ever got more than a few kilometers past the Barian beach.
Merag and Nasch came from the sea, but they were surely not life. However, they weren’t exactly the opposite of life either. It would be rash to call them “dead”. They were trapped in a strange limbo, possibly for eternity.
“I’m going to sea.” Nasch said calmly. “You are in charge, and Durbe is to assist you if necessary.”
“But brother,” Merag protested, “you can’t just leave! Especially not alone. Let me come with you. Like you said, Durbe could-”
“I’m sorry,” he interrupted, “but this is something I must do alone.” Merag nodded, despite not understanding, and wished him off as he floated off.
Nasch’s raft was made of the most acid resistant crystals he could find, and it accomplished what he had hoped. He floated along on his raft, thinking how fortunate it was that Barians didn’t eat so he could pack light. However… it was lonely. No one to talk to. No one to spend time with. Nasch stretched his rock forme, and lied back. Closing his eyes… just for a minute.
After a while, he awoke to the sound of a sea storm. He looked around to see he was completely surrounded, and didn’t know which way he came in from. He stood up, throwing shards of floating crystals (an ability he shared with all the other emperors) and hopped across them. Hop… Hop... He hoped he could keep this up until he reached shore, as he had to abandon his raft. Hop… Hop... Nasch heard a noise, distracting him, so he made one crystal far too slick for his rock feet to grip, and he fell into the sea. While he was out of the storm, but he wasn’t safe in the least.
Barians don’t breathe. At least, they don’t have any proof either way. Nasch didn’t feel much sinking into the abyss. Despite being an island kingdom, he never learned to swim- not that it’d help him now. He just accepted his sinking fate and lied back as the sea swallowed him whole. Acid bit away at his rock forme. “At least…” he thought, “I’m glad Merag didn’t end up like me.”
“I’m going after him.” Merag told Durbe, pushing him to sit on the throne. “Take care of the others while I take care of my brother.”
“But Merag-” Durbe objected.
“No, Durbe. I have to do this alone.” She patted his rock head. “It’s what he did, so it’s what I will too.”
“That isn’t what I meant!” He said, trying to stand up, but Merag pushed him back down. “It’s dangerous!”
Merag gave a mouthless smile. “I’ll be fine.”
Merag set off, using the same crystal she remembered Nasch using for his. If she squinted, she could see him in the distance. “I still can catch up!” she thought to herself.
She didn’t bring an oar, so she was at mercy of the current. Sometimes it felt like she was going fast enough to reach him in a minute, while others it felt like she’d never see him again.
But she what was there. “Sea storm clouds…” she thought, and figured Nasch was already in it. The current picked up and her raft moved much faster towards the storm, as if it was about to create a cyclone.
She heard clunking. Merag turned to the right to see Nasch jumping from his crystal shards out of the storm. She ditched her raft and started hoping across her floating shards as well. “Nasch!” she yelled, only to see Nasch slip and fall into the sea. Merag gasped, and dived straight into the sea after him.
“What am I thinking?” she thought. Sure she could swim, but where would that get them? Nasch’s eyes were closed as he sunk, and Merag kept swimming towards him. Both of them were eroding and Merag knew there wasn’t an easy way to undo it. His core gem started glowing, and with a blast of light, everything besides the pink gem disappeared.
She grabbed the gem, seeing as it slowly lost its colour until it became as clear as glass. “If that’s all he could withstand, I will surely go soon-” Merag thought, but was distracted by the familiar red flash coming from her core gem. She placed her brother’s gem to hers and whispered, “I guess I didn’t get here fast enough, huh?”
