“After Avery’s medical emergency, I decided to do a personal assessment,” the AI says, curiously determined. “I have re-evaluated and re-sorted the sections of my code that I am permitted to adapt. I have created some logic wedges to allow me to re-define inadequate labels. I have also elected to simplify the ‘ReGene Employee’ label as ‘humans currently receiving a paycheck from ReGene management,’ thereby allowing me to classify you as junior staff along with the interns. Thus, I am now permitted to give you information that I am permitted to give junior staff!”

Look, I’m no expert on AI, but rearranging their own code like this is not something that a security AI is supposed to be able to do to itself, I’m pretty sure!

I glance back at Lucine, who is on her bed, doodling. “Luce,” I say, a little worried, “should we tell someone about this?”

Avery would be drawn to technokinesis . . . very lucky for them!

Lucine tends to chat around with the other volunteers, but Avery’s usually alone or with me. Right now, they’re just sitting quietly, stacking carrots like lincoln logs and downing raw ranch cups like they’re tequila shots. Sometimes they scare me.

Reason number #1497 why Avery is very good and should be appreciated.
