'Hora', performed by Avi Toledano. Composition: Avi Toledano. Lyrics: Yoram Tahar-Lev.
Israel in the seventies and eighties is much like Sweden was in the second decade. It can crank out the Eurovision hits, it can get a top ten with its eyes closed, and once in a while it can sneak a victory.
'Hora's' second place saw it continue Israel's most successful Eurovision period (with a record of 1st, 1st, no appearance, 7th, 2nd, 2nd), and its easy to see why. In the early eighties you could still score highly with this 'all singing and dancing' performance.
As a performance that plays to the jury, Israel has clearly found a winning formula. 'Hora' brings back the winning elements to great effect, but the laws of diminishing returns are already starting to show. It's not as fast paced or engaging as 'A-Ba-Ni-Ba', nor does it evoke a sense of belonging as 'Hallelujah'. It delivers a strong result, but it doesn't deliver anything new to the mix.
Points: 100. Placing: 2nd.
