Eurovision Fact #497:
When Harrogate hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982, the BBC poked fun at the fact that most of the International audience had no clue where the city was.
As a result of this, the opening to the the contest had the phrase "Where is Harrogate?" appear in the languages of the participating nations. A map of Europe was shown, and each nation until the United Kingdom was reached would be highlighted in red as "where is Harrogate?" zoomed across the screen.
When the UK was finally reached, the map was zoomed in to show only the UK, then it zoomed in further and further until it reached Harrogate.
