Ello, ello! So i just felt like doing something bright and colorful. I'm slowly starting to learn how to cut my crease with having slightly hooded eyes, but ...
(Photos are of her awesome Rule63!Alucard from Hellsing & Hellsing Ultimate and Lady Loki cosplays :D)
1: What made you get into cosplaying?
Well I have always loved costumes and make up, but I never felt confident enough to wear either of them, especially since I was already bullied a lot in school for being different. Since I am fat and black, two things that are usually not generally not welcomed in society very fast, I kept my interest in anime to myself, so I didn't get picked on even more. I didn't know that cosplay was a thing until around 2011. Fast forward a few years, I met some of my best friends who had actually cosplayed before, and when they invited me to my first anime convention, I was ecstatic. I went to my first convention, Kami-Con Season 5 in 2013 and I loved it! I saw my favorite voice actors, got to meet so many cool people, and much more, but my favorite part was seeing the different cosplayers. They were tall, fat, skinny, short, black, white, disabled, various religions and everything in between and everyone was just HAPPY to be there and to wear and share their cosplays. I got so inspired after that, I started working on my first cosplay, and I haven't turned back.
2: What is your best cosplay moment?
My best cosplay moment was when my best friend Stephie and I won the Best Group Cosplay award at Tupelo Comic Con earlier this year. It was the first convention in Tupelo, MS and we finally finished our Steampunk cosplays and we wanted to debut them at the con. We were really REALLY nervous because we saw so many other great cosplayers, but when they announced us as the winners we were so proud!
3: You have the opportunity to pick one of two for your cosplay of a character: The perfect wig or the perfect prop. Which do you choose, and why?
This is a hard decision, but I'd probably choose the perfect prop. When I did my first cosplay, my wig honestly wasn't very good. I got it pretty cheap and made it work with the accessories, but everyone knew exactly who I was when I finished my prop. I think having a good prop for me just gives me a good grasp, literally. My favorite part about making my cosplay is when I finish my props because I usually finish them last, so it's the most rewarding, and it's like the "big finale" when I get to hold the completed project in my hands.
4: What is one thing you like and one thing you dislike about cosplaying and the cosplay community?
What I like: I like how people are becoming more open to cosplaying and comfortable about it because at first, a lot of people felt left out because they felt if they didn't LOOK exactly like the characters, they couldn't do it. I love being able to cosplay because I know even though I may not look exactly like the character, I don't have to, and that's okay. I make alterations when I want to so the cosplay suits my body and my comfort level, and I like that people are able to learn to love their bodies and how to make the clothes fit them, not the other way around.
What I dislike: There are a few things, but two things I really dislike are:
1. Body-shaming/slut-shaming and/or harassment: So someone doesn't have the same body type as a character, it's a fictional character and it shouldn't matter. And slut shaming girls because they are in more revealing cosplays is just ignorant and rude. People cosplay for fun, and for many people, it's the only way they learn how to be more comfortable and confident with their body, so just don't be a dick about it honestly. And just because someone may or may not be wearing a skimpy cosplay, or just because they are in a cosplay in general doesn't mean you can treat them like the character they are dressed as, i.e. cursing at them or invading personal space. They aren't your fantasy, they are REAL PEOPLE, and you don't get a free pass to be a creepy butthole
2. Cosplay Elitist: Not everyone has money or the skill to make their entire cosplay, and some people just don't want to make it. Some people enjoy working with their hands and if the edges are a little rusty, who cares. Don't knock someone's costume because they bought it, or it isn't accurate because of whatever reason, it's just not cool. If you want to offer constructive criticism, learn how to do it without being insulting, or just don't say anything at all.
5: What is your favorite cosplay of yours and why?
My favorite cosplay I've done is Harley Quinn. She's my favorite DC lady villain and the first cosplay I've done. She's an amazing character and her story just resonates with me. I plan on doing most of her incarnations over time.
6: What is the weirdest thing you’ve done for cosplay?
I've actually not really don't anything too weird sadly, I haven't done enough cosplays to have to venture too deep yet. I'll say that painting the inside of your ears and nostrils is a very strange, yet satisfying, sensation.
7: What is your dream cosplay and why?
Even though Harley Quinn will always be my baby, Storm is my dream cosplay. I remember watching 90's X-MEN and seeing her and I was just in awe of how powerful she was, not just in terms of abilities, but her personality and strength was really empowering for a girl. I hope to embody that kind of confidence and wisdom one day, and being able to capture that essence in a cosplay one day would be a great start.
8: What’s the weirdest material you’ve ever used to build your costume?
Hair spray and flour. It was a strange and unusual time, but it worked for as long as I needed it to.
9: What’s your favorite aspect of cosplay?
I would have to say the initial designing and the prop making. Sometimes, I will just be in bed, nearly asleep and then ideas spring into my head so I have to get up and start drawing out what I have in mind before it goes away. I can fine tune what I need to in the design and figure out any small alterations later. And with the prop making, I love seeing each piece being added to the puzzle, till I can wipe away tears of frustration and pull the last of glue gun strings away from my fingers to marvel at my creation. It's always a journey into madness, but it is so worth it when you see the finish product.
10: Who are 3 cosplayers you admire and why?
Kelli Smith- I got to meet her at Tupelo Comic Con and she is just really chill and down to earth and didn't mind sharing some of her tips to cosplayers who asked for advice or just wanted a picture.
Yaya Han- She didn't even intend on cosplaying becoming a full time career at first, but look at her now. It's really inspiring in that aspect and makes me want to get better and better at sewing and crafting in general.
BriChibi Cosplays- She was the first famous cosplay that I saw who looked like me and it was in all honesty, a magical moment. She didn't change who she was and she is an amazing cosplayer and just a really nice person I my opinion.
11: What is one piece of advice you’d give to anyone new to cosplay?
Don't aim for perfection on the first go, because you'll end up with half finished products and tears. Seriously, take your time, do your research, and learn how to craft and cosplay in YOUR own way. It doesn't matter if you bought your costume or had someone make your prop or you did it all on your own, the moment you put on all those things, you are a cosplayer, and no one can take it away from you.
12: How has cosplaying positively impacted your life?
I have always liked art and being a cosplayer helps me express it freely. In between work and going to college, and having to build a stable future, I tend to get lost and forget parts of myself, but when I get to start on a new prop, or work on designs for cosplays, I feel whole again.
13: What is your favorite convention and why?
So far, my favorite convention has been Kami-Con. It was my first convention and I've always enjoyed myself when I've gotten to go to it. It's always just really positive there and I have so far only had one small incident that I've gotten angry, but it was just because of one person, and it didn't ruin my entire experience.
14: What are your next cosplays?
I'm currently drawing out some designs for a Sailor Moon crossovers, namely Sailor Joker or Sailor Storm. I’m also working on a Rule63! Hades from Hercules, but a punk version, and a few others that I just work on when I get a spark of inspiration to finish some other pieces.
15: What is your dream photoshoot location?
Honestly, I don't have one. My friend Stephie and I have learned to take our photos wherever we can. We've both got youtube channels, so we're pretty comfortable with being in front of a camera, at least most of the time, and we've learn how to use proper photography angles and some basic editing, so I'm really not that picky when it comes to a location. At the Tupelo Comic Con, we found an empty alley and took our own photos, and I think they turned out pretty great, even though it wasn't exactly what we were looking for, so I don't think I've ever really given a thought to a serious location. If I did have the option one day, I think it would just depend on the cosplay that I was going to be wearing, like if I was cosplaying as Raven from Teen Titans, I'd like to be in a grand Library, probably levitating and surrounded by huge tomes or some kind of action shot.
