About the 'V' in AVB
As mentioned ealier this year by Thom Mullins in a post at 'All Voices', one of the InfoComm Blogs, (http://blog.infocommblog.org/allvoices/archives/73) there are very few companies that support and produce equipment and devices for the AVB Standard in the Video field. I promised that I will have an eye or two on these subject at the famous ISE 2012 show in Amsterdam last week. Here are my views. There was a booth from the AVnu alliance, who is "an industry forum dedicated to the advancement of professional-quality audio video by promoting the adoption of the IEEE 802.1 Audio Video Bridging (AVB)". They show circuit boards and some preliminary devices for AVB devices, but nearly everything related to Audio. I talked to Lee Minich, Marketing work group chair of AVnu Alliance, and he agreed that there is only a very small amount of companies who even think on developing devices for AVB, especially for Video transmission. Btw. if someone is interested in a very good and informative overview about AVB and its basic ideas, look here: http://www.labxtechnologies.com/avb-you/why-avb/ More worse in this context is, in my opinion, that Cisco, one of the founding promotors of the Avnu alliance, does not sell or even announced a product which is AVB certified, and don't allow their employees even to talk about their future plans on AVB! This is what happens during a very interessting panel discussion on the Future Trends Summit. The session was about "The Future of Audio Networking", what will come out if you ask the question about 'the future of Video Networking'? In this context one of the major problems of AVB occures. AVB can only rise, if the basic infrastructure is implemented, this means without the broad availability of network components as i.e. switches, it would be very very dificult to convince your clients to invest in AVB equipment. I asked a staff member of Pakedge Device & Software Inc. who deliver high perfomance switches preconfigured for ProAV applications, if and when they will certify their products for AVB, as they may have only to adjust very few things to be certified. The answer was obvious, if I order 500 switches and will only do this if they are certified, they will do this at once, otherwise it will be too expensive and too complex! On the other hand, if you talk about Standardization especially about AVB, you have to talk also about HDBaseT, an alliance with some important players in the CE & the ProAV markets (i.e. LG, Samsung, Sony). The alliance wants to set a 'proprietary standard' for the 5Play convergence of uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over Ethernet and control signals. A lot of these efforts are CE driven in my opinion, as only there, in the very large and always growing Consumer market sector, you can earn enough money to return your R+D investments. Therefore it was not very astonishing that the HDBaseT Booth on the ISE was a little bit 'consumer' driven, even if they always try to mention that her 'industry standard' is very important also for the ProAV business. But the only units they show, are a prototype of a Samsung TV, connected only with 1 Ethernetcable, but they only show Video & Sound on it, no live Internetaccess and no controlsignals, so it seems to be only 3Play. The same with a small Mitsubishi video (graphic) projector, the power comes separate. Conclusion on HDBaseT, they seem to have similar problems as AVB, with one important difference, as they are proprietary, they hang not on standardization's sleeve, and with some key players from designated markets, they can take some niches and block these for AVB. We'll see...
