Favorite Stage Musicals
1. Billy Elliot
What can I say, this has got to be every dancer's favorite musical. I've seen this three times live. Twice in Chicago and once with the touring company. This musical is about a young English lad named Billy who falls in love with ballet during the English coal miner's strike. What's great about this musical is the stunning historical backdrop. It's a volatile time so the music can switch from classical ballet to angry drums without any confusion. Also, the music was written by Elton John who is basically the greatest. I mean he did the Lion King music and was featured in Moulin Rouge so he can really hit it out of the park. I really love the story arc of Billy's family in this: how they go from just worrying about the strike and forcing him to box to supporting Billy's dancing career. My favorite song is "Electricity". I cry every single time I hear it because it just expresses the feeling I get when I'm dancing so perfectly. To have it put into words is just magical. I also love the message of individuality in this show. One of the slogans is "if you want to dance...dance!" and it says that nobody should be afraid to dance because of gender or background (we need more boys who dance. C'mon boys you get to be best friends with like a hundred girls who get all sweaty in just a leotard and tights this activity was created for you). Don't even get me started about the dancing. Billy's solos in "Angry Dance," "Electricity," and the Swan Lake Interlude are phenomenal.
2. Les Mis
This is totally cliche but I don't care. Les Mis is beautiful. I'm both a French and history nerd so I get really excited about this musical. I even wrote my term paper based on this June Insurrection of 1832. The music is my favorite part though. I normally don't like sung through musicals but this is the one exception. The tunes are so catchy and I love how each song tells a huge chunk of the story. I don't know how to describe such beauty but my ears are smiling. Don't hate me but I really want to be Cosette and I ship her with Marius so hard. This musical is a perfect translation of Hugo's excellent book. If you love Les Mis I recommend reading it.
3. Thoroughly Modern Millie
This is my guilty pleasure musical. It is all just fun and cheese. Set in the roaring twenties, which is such a fun time period to have a story in, this musical has the cutest love story of all time. I may be a little biased because my OTP is Jily and the relationship between them and Jimmy and Millie is basically the same. They start off hating each other but then they fall madly in love unexpectedly. I love the surprise kiss at the end of Act 1 and then the audience trick to close it out. I was so mad at Miss Dorothy at the end of Act 1 but then it's all resolved. I think the side plot of the white slavery ring is a nice balance to the main plot and it ties in really well to the main storyline. My favorite songs are "Jimmy" and "Forget About the Boy." Really contradicting I know, as one is all lovey and the other is a major girl power ballad. The dancing in "Speed Test" is awesome. I do wish that Miss. Dorothy ended up with Trevor Graydon though.
4. Next to Normal
I didn't think I would like this one as it has such a dark subject but THE MUSIC IS UNICORN TEARS!!!!! I can't even pick a favorite song that's how much I love all of them. I'm also obsessed with the intricacy of Gabe's character (see my previous analysis) and the way he ties in to the family. "Hi Dad"
5. The Potter Musicals
If you haven't seen these go to YouTube and type in AVPM Act One Part One...you won't regret it.
I'm laughing so hard at Jared Padalecki's intense face on the Season 4 DVD cover and all I could think of was this soundbyte
like, that expression
