as a kid, percy used to see good fathers with their sons and scoff at the sight. he rolled his eyes any time one of his classmates brought up spending time with their dad, even pretended having any meaningful relationship with your parent wasn’t cool. everyone probably saw through his facade — percy learned early having a father figure wasn’t in the books for him, and he coped how he could.
he felt heartbroken for that kid. even after meeting poseidon, who felt unnerved by his son’s potential, percy kept a sarcastically witted distance as he protected the world, the gods, his father without wavering. this is the sign to prove myself. to prove i’m worthy of being loved. i’m a hero, strong, brave - it never occurred to percy he was enough. not until his dad scooped him up like it was nothing, no clear sign of letting go.
it took less than a second for percy to embrace poseidon back, his own hold fierce. ‘ hey dad, good to see you too ? i, um — ‘ he trailed off, then rested his head on the sea god’s shoulder. percy didn’t have to do anything else but cling a little tighter to get the point across ; he needed this.
