On Acadien History in AWAE
I know nobody asked, BUT, here’s some info on Acadien (French) and English relations in Anne’s era in case anyone was curious about how Diana’s family behaved towards Jerry’s.
Obviously there is the classic French vs. English tensions through history, which became very common in Canada when the English deported Acadiens. From then on, Acadien people tended to be poorer (giving some classic class-related snobbery), and they were usually Catholic, while English were Protestant.
English people in the Maritimes tended to live separate from Acadiens, and treated them poorly. Even in the 1960s, English people were oftentimes hired over Acadiens (this was in New Brunswick, from my family’s experience). Acadiens were mocked by English people for the “lesser” foods they ate, for their language, culture, etc. These tensions still exist today, though certainly lesser than the 1800s.
So it is very much realistic for the Barry’s to strongly dislike Jerry’s family, and if a relationship blossoms between Jerry and Diana, they will certainly disapprove. I mean, my great Grampy (Grand-Pére) was disowned by his family for converting to Protestantism in the 1970s (they saw this as losing your French heritage and “turning English” — AKA turning into those guys who weren’t the kindest to Acadiens), so yeahhh this is a very realistic portrayal. I can’t wait to see where they go with this story, and to see if anything happens between Jerry and Diana, and peoples reactions to this relationship!!
