Getting Black Hair in DAI!

Ok, so @roguelioness was wondering how to get black hair for her characters in DAI, and I thought I figured putting together a quick little guide with pictures and stuff would be the most helpful. So here you are!

First, you will need to download the DAI CLI Save Editor by ricco19 at the Nexus. It’s a really neat tool that lets you manually adjust the colors of several aspects of your character, from make-up to hair and eye color. The save editor isn’t a mod, so you can save it in a separate folder from your mods. I put mine in its own folder.

2. You will need to find the save you want to edit in the DAI save folder. It should be in the same place you find your screenshots. They are in order by the most recent save. Drag that save over the dai_editor application and that will launch the program.

3. A window will pop up. Listed at the top is the information associated with that save, such as the Inquisitor and what level she is, and where she is located, etc. Use that to verify it’s the right save you want to edit. The menu shows the options for editing. To change hair color you want option 3.

4. Type in a 3 and hit enter. That will bring up the first aspect you can edit. In this case it’s the eyeliner intensity. So you can make that darker or lighter pretty easily without going to the BE here if you want!

5. It will show you the current value, and then on the right is where you can enter a new value between 0 and 1. If you don’t want to change something, then hit enter without entering a new value, and it won’t change.

6. So to get to hair color, hit enter until Eyebrow Color Red shows up. If you want black hair, then you need to change the Red, Green, and Blue values all to 0.

NOTE: Usually you will not need to change the Hair Spec1 and Spec2 colors. They deal with the shine on the hair, and what color that shine has. If you change all the values to zero, you will just get a black void with no shape. If you want, you could add a zero after the decimal point to lower the shine. If you want a colorless shine, make sure that the Red, Blue, and Green values are all the same. If for example you have a higher Red value, the shine on the hair will appear red, which you may not want for black hair.

7. So usually skip the Hair Spec options and then when you get to Scalp Hair, change those to 0 as well. If your character has facial hair, you will want to change the Facial Hair Colors as well.

8. The last options are for changing eye color, which you would likely skip, and then you hit Enter to finish.

9. A new save file will show up in the Save folder, with the same name but ending in .NEW. Back up the old save just in case something goes wrong, then remove the old save from the Save folder. Rename the altered file by deleting the .NEW, and launch the game! Your character should have black hair now!

NOTE: Going to the Black Emporium at any time will reset the hair colors back to the default. So if you go to the BE, you will need to change the hair colors again. So it’s probably a good idea to write down the new values, just in case you need to re-enter them.

10. Finally, if you want you can get any color you want with this method. Play around with it! I especially like to darken brown hair colors by just adding a 0 to the original RGB values. So if the original Red was 0.00345, I would change it to 0.00035 or 0.00003. For example, the character at the top doesn’t have entirely black hair. You can also change just the eyebrow color compared to the hair color, etc.
