one thing I always liked about ZZ, even on my mostly-meh-and-disappointed first watch through, was how it presents its fascists.
Gundam sometimes gets into a tough corner when it comes to humanizing its antagonists, where the audience begins to side with them. No, Zeon was never right, even though Ramba Ral is kind to Amuro in the desert and blah, blah, blah... and that's not even getting at when certain fans and creatives start with Zeon apologia. (I'm looking at you, Requiem for Ve[hrmacht]ngeance.)
But you know what faction never gets the "did nothing wrong" treatment?"
Axis Zeon/Neo Zeon under Haman Karn.
At best, they're buffoons and stooges, and at worst, butchers and predators. They carve through the Earth sphere, destroying everything in their path, and when it seems they might actually take power, the clash of egos turns into a schism that tears the faction apart. The audience can never root for these fools and madmen.
And for what? They singlehandedly wind back any worthwhile causes of Spacenoid liberation, Earth environmentalism, etc. within the setting by decades, wipe out millions, kill off beloved characters, and lose badly.
And it's effective writing. Zeon apologists seldom turn out for Axis, beyond the "HAMAN-SAMA!" Mashmyre Cello bit. There's a case to be made that, in this way, they provide a stronger anti-war narrative antagonist than Zeon in 0079. Because no one can defend them, nor the utterly corrupt and spineless Earth Federation in the same series, who time-and-time-again kowtow to and nearly succumb to them.
What utterly reprehensible bastards.

March 28, UC 0081
15 months after their departure from the Earth Sphere, evacuees from the former Principality reach the asteroid belt and the mining base Axis.
The influx of new arrivals from Zeon causes the population of the base to swell to 30,000 – including civilians, military personnel, mobile suit engineers, and the infant Mineva Lao Zabi, the only living heir to the toppled regime.
