Looking at a magazine about cars and car parts. There was a story scrambled up in the pages, only a few lines between pictures and ads. The pictures were of car suspension parts, but like stuff found in a junkyard; old and rusty axles with leaf springs. The pictures showed a progression of the axle and leaf springs, then a close up of one side of it, then the axle and springs under a long car, maybe a station wagon or a small limo from the 1960's. Then an absurd image of the axle huge and the leaf spring attaching to the front and rear of the car. Then the car up on higher springs with small tires. The writing was telling a tale about finding parts from drag race cars in the 1950's and getting them as soon as the race was over (like, taking the car parts off the drag race cars after the finish line) to use for the car project, which was a drag race limo/station wagon. The last image was in black and white and looked like it was taken in the 1960's. Whitewall tires. Other people were nearby leaning close as I read.

Portal axles are one of the best upgrades for clearance and driveline longevity because they raise the axle centre without increasing wheel diameter, giving you more ground clearance at the differential and reducing the risk of bellying out. Starting this crawler build, I set a clear brief: low gearing, maximum articulation and reliable waterproofing for wet runs, and I sketched the chassis layout before ordering parts to avoid unnecessary modifications later on.
The first hands-on stage was fitting portal axles, which transform ground clearance and reduce stress on drivetrain components by giving an effective gear reduction at the hubs, and I chose aluminium portals for strength and durability while keeping weight reasonable.
Installing the portals required shimming the C-hubs and recalculating driveline angles to maintain CV joints within safe operating ranges, and I fitted longer inner driveshafts while checking for binding at full steering lock to ensure smooth operation.
For torque and gear setup I ran with a 35T brushed motor to start and matched it to a low 60:1 gearbox ratio to keep wheel spin gentle and controllable, then adjusted slipper clutch tension and motor timing in the ESC to prevent stripped gears on tight climbs.
