Zombie/Biter AU Group Post
Hey everyone! I'm so glad you all like the Keegan story with the Biters so much! There are so many questions, and they are all so good, and so many ideas!
I thought creating a post that is just for talking about it would be a great idea! Maybe not—you decide! I will be linking this in my master list so it can more easily be found by everyone.
You can all talk about the storyline as much as you want here! Comment and comment on each other's comments about what you think might happen or try to piece bits of the story together to figure things out.
Make suggestions! I encourage you all that if you think something should be changed or added to the story, that you put it in here! It will make it easier for me to find and respond to. I can even try to write in a character of your own invention if you want! Keep an eye out because I'll hold little contests and quizzes to pick the winners, and they can design a character that will be mentioned in the story. It could range from the ID of a person to a person's house or even them joining a colony or being a Biter.
I'll be constantly linking everything related to the AU here, and you are all free to use any material of it so long as you mention that it came from this post since other people may have also helped in creating things. I would love to see your ideas and what you can make in this AU! There are about 1 billion people still alive in it, so I think there is enough to go around. Haha.
I read everyone's comments and messages in my inbox. Sometimes I might take a while to answer because I'm in school, at work, or sleeping. But I always like your comments and read them and try to respond to as many as I can! So please comment!

The winner of this contest gets to design part of a mysterious character. In summary, this character is going to be seen later on in the story and is not a big fan of a specific other character. This demonstrates the extent to which the focus on "parts" has impacted people with DID, both in media and in online spaces that tout themselves as advocates.
I have been messaged multiple times and told that I am "speaking over real trauma survivors" and to "stop roleplaying." Aside from the fact that I have never—and will never—share information about parts online (not even my own), it is also clear that this harassment stems from the way DID is portrayed online.
DID is a dissociative disorder and one which forms in response to trauma. It always has been, and it always will be. It is not in the diagnostic criteria simply because it is also a disorder involving dissociative amnesia, which means many patients do not recall the trauma they endured.
DID is not, and never will be, a roleplay of characters, a creation of "traumatic backstories," or a diagnosis that makes someone's trauma less valid or renders them "not a real trauma survivor."
All of these messages have one thing in common: they assume DID is roleplay in your head. They believe parts are just characters created for fun. This stems from both ableism—such as people creating impossible standards for survivors to justify hatred of disabled people—and the way online communities highlight and center parts as the primary symptoms of DID.
I've even been told that DID only requires you to present with parts to be diagnosed. Look at what these communities' actions have caused. Look at how you impact the public image of a clinical disorder, and consider whether it is worth changing. Consider if it is worth highlighting the voices of those who are suffering the most—those willing to speak about dissociative amnesia, PTSD, depersonalization, and derealization in a serious and genuine manner.
Because I assure you, if this community continues on its current path, we will all end up just as isolated and stereotyped as we have been in the past.
Alter? I hardly know her
personhood is a social construct. you can be multiple people in one body. it's a matter of identity, not external or physical observation.
for people with DID (& similar conditions) specifically, alters activity can be mapped in the brain. to that end, alters are part of one brain. to some, that means that means alters are parts of one person. but that's not how every system is going to feel.
in our system, we see ourselves as different neural pathways that together make up the appearance of one person, but it's more like we're... variants of a person who doesn't really exist. kind of like how there's the OG character and the AU character. they're the same character but not the same person and the person doesn't really exist.
some people see this as being parts of one person, others don't. if someone understands their system as being multiple people instead of parts, don't correct them! if someone understands their system as being parts of one person, don't correct them! if someone uses terms other than alter (ex: headmate, sysmate, etc), don't correct them!
systems are allowed to decide how to refer to themselves. it's a highly unique experience for all of us. we should all be respecting that, regardless of system origin. multiplicity, plurality, more than one. "multiple people" is just as valid a version of that as "parts of a whole."
