Things Are Different Now

Tagging: Alice Caroll (Montague), Barnaby Montague, and Erin Montague Location:The Montague Residence, Greenwich, CT Time Frame: June 1st, 2026 General Notes: Alice wakes up to find a lot has changed..

Alice woke up to the cries of a baby. It was a fairly odd sound to wake up to for her. She didn’t have a child. She certainly didn’t recall agreeing to babysit for someone with one. So, what was she hearing? As she opened her eyes, she saw that she wasn’t at home. At least, wherever she was wasn’t where she thought of as home. It was a bedroom, certainly. One that fit her taste. It was still dark out. Most importantly, someone was beside her in bed. Now, that, she definitely didn’t recall. Rolling over to see who it was, she saw it was a man. A very handsome man, at that. But, she didn’t recognize him at all. As she blinked, trying to figure things out, he awoke and just gave her a smile. “I’ve got her, darling. You go back to sleep. I’ll wake you up if I need you.”

Then, he leaned over and kissed her gently. Alice was very confused as to what was going on now. Still a bit groggy from her sleep, Alice waited until the very handsome and seemingly British man donned his robe and went down the hall. Once she was sure he was out of sight, Alice looked around a bit more. The first thing that popped out to her were the pictures. She was in them with that man. But, she didn’t recall taking any pictures like the ones she was seeing. Padding as quietly as she could around the room, she found that it seemed that she lived here. There was clothing that was certainly hers and what looked to be the man’s she had been sleeping beside. As she looked some more at the photos she saw, she couldn’t help but do a double take. Some were engagement photos. Others were obviously wedding pictures. In a few, there was a very obvious bump in her belly. Alice couldn’t help but look in the full length mirror. It didn’t seem to be present any longer. But, she opened her robe and lifted her nightgown to see that she had stretch marks.She lowered her nightgown again and tied up her robe as she turned back to the pictures The pictures that drew her eyes the most were the ones featuring a baby. The child was gorgeous. Absolutely perfect in Alice’s eyes. Could it be that.. Could that beautiful baby be hers?

Looking at her left hand, Alice noticed that she had a wedding ring on. It was an Edwardian style ring, obviously an antique. A well taken care of antique that was residing on her ring finger. As the pieces began falling into place, Alice couldn’t help but just have a million more questions firing through her mind. She seemed to be married to an very handsome man and they had a child together. But, she didn’t remember any of it. When had this happened? She had to take a moment to gather her thoughts. She still needed to know more.

So, she walked down the hall towards the room with the door open. As she stood in the doorway, she looked in and couldn’t help but smile. It was a nursery, not unlike hers and Peter’s. This one was bigger though and even more grand. Despite the darkness, Alice could see the pastel greens and yellows. Her eyes were naturally drawn to the man she’d woken up next to, who was walking around with a baby in his arms. A rather fussy sounding baby, who didn’t seem to want to go to sleep. She just stood there for a bit, watching this gorgeous man hold try and soothe the infant in his arms. It made her smile. Finally, a sigh escaped her and garnered the man’s attention.

”Alice? Oh no. Erin, look. We’ve woken Mummy.” He joked at the infant in his arms. Carefully bouncing her up and down and rocking their daughter back and forth ever so slightly, he looked at Alice with genuine concern. “I’m sorry. I said I’d take care of it. You should sleep. I’m afraid she’s having trouble with her teeth again. Little miss Erin here seems to be very tired, but refuses tolike anything I try to help..” He smiled at his daughter and cooed at her as he walked on over to Alice. “We weren’t bothering you, were we, darling?” His eyes were full of genuine concern. “I’m afraid the teething is making it hard for her to sleep. Poor thing. I’ve tried the teething ring, applesauce.. I even gave her little gums a massage. She’s having none of it.” He sighed and gave Erin an apologetic look. “I’m sorry it hurts, sweetie. Dad is trying his best.”

Seeing the man try so hard to soothe Erin, their daughter, it made Alice smile. He so obviously adored her. The concern he had for both herself and their daughter, it just gave her those warm, fuzzy tingles of joy. She held out her arms. “It’s alright, honey. I just couldn’t get back to sleep. Would you mind if I try?” Alice caught the quirk of his eyebrow as she called him honey. Darn it, if only she knew his name. Still, he carefully transferred Erin into her arms. The little girl had her face screwed up, obviously not pleased with the pain of her teeth emerging. Taking the girl into her arms, Alice carefully made her way on over to a rocking chair and sat down. As she rocked back and forth, she couldn’t take her eyes off of Erin. Een with her face screwed up and wailing in discomfort, Alice could see the reflection of both herself and the man who she was assuming was her husband in her. “Would you please check to see if I put any washcloths in the fridge?” She smiled as her husband quickly went over to the small fridge in the nursery and pulled out a washcloth that had been dipped in something as it was still damp, but was now chilled.

”Is this… chamomile on this?” He inquired as he handed her the washcloth, which Alice then offered Erin. Erin began gnawing on the washcloth and slowly began to calm. That made both Alice and her husband smile. “Where did you learn that?”

”Peter had an awful time of it when he was teething. I was old enough to help a bit. So, our nanny would make chamomile tea, soak some washcloths with it, and put them in the fridge to chill. They really seemed to help him. So, I hoped it would work for Erin.” She couldn’t help but smile at her sweet daughter who was now showing signs of nodding off. The babe’s little blue eyes were closing and staying closed.

”Erin, your mother is brilliant. I hope you know that.” The man whispered as to not wake the now sleeping baby. Alice blushed a bit at the compliment as she carefully stood up and put their daughter back in her crib, They both stood there, watching their daughter as she slept. Arms wrapped around Alice’s waist, drawing her closer to her husband. While she did contemplate pulling away from him, Alice couldn’t help but feel rather comforted and pleased by the action. So, she allowed it. “She’s absolutely perfect.” She whispered, still a bit tired. Not to mention, she was still terribly confused. How had this happened? Was she dreaming? That seemed to be the most logical explanation. But, it felt so real. “Do we have to leave her alone in here?” She didn’t want to take her eyes off of this perfect little creature which she assumed she’d helped make.

The man chuckled softly. “We’re right next door. Come along, now. It seems that she’s not the only sleepy one.” Alice allowed him to guide her back down the short walk down the hall that it tok to get to their room. As they crawled into bed, she couldn’t help but fel odd about sleeping next to someone. She still had so many questions. But, she was tired. So, for now, she rolled onto her side and fell back asleep. Hopefully, she’d wake up to find this was all a dream. A very odd, elaborate dream. Yet, some part of her hoped it wasn’t a dream. As Alice began to drift off to sleep, she would have sworn she felt an arm drape over her. But, she was simply too tired to open her eyes to check.

Shards of Broken Light | Lorndy

The wedding was nice. Lorna had some tears sneak pass her at seeing her brother. It was nice to see him happy, although, she could wonder how happy he was if he didn’t have his father with him. However, that wasn’t a thought that would bother her for now, it was a time of celebration, not doubt. At least not toward her brother, maybe to herself. Especially when she saw Tandy. In an embarrassing fashion, she ducked her head and for the first time in a long time tried to be inconspicuous, which wasn’t very easy, given her blazer and hair. Maybe it was the couple of drinks she had straight after, but she decided it was time to confront Tandy. No more excuses or waiting to find her alone. She had to do it now.

So, she walked up to her, in the middle of dancing no less and spoke up. “Mind if I cut in,” she asked, feeling incredibly cheesy at saying it. Still, she had a smile on her face, albeit not as confident as she would have liked. She looked at Tyrone, then Tandy, wondering what her response would be. Who knows how Tandy felt about her now, maybe she hated her. Yesenia encouraged her to get back in touch with Tandy, but when asked why, she wouldn’t say it. That wasn’t like her friend so it only made things even stranger. However, Lorna felt bad when Jason told her what he had done. It was even worse when he made it seem like he was doing it for her. However, it looked like Tandy was doing much better now.

"Well, this certainly is something, is it not?” Magda smiled softly, mostly talking to herself, but she noticed that her words had caught the attention of someone nearby. “I am sorry, just...musing aloud. Are you enjoying yourself?”

I'll Be There For You || Marilation

She hadn’t intended on spending the day in Central Park but being with her best friend made everything seem a bit more entertaining. She had never seen the park so crowded before but she appreciated the small spot they snagged for their blanket set up. Marie had gone to a food truck to get some snacks for her and Jubilee. Were the snacks overpriced? Probably but the taste made them worth it. Marie returned to their blanket, arms filled with street food. “I didn’t know what to get so I kinda’ got a bit of things from a few trucks….” Marie sat down on the blanket and carefully place the food down. She would’ve given Jubilee the first pick but she had been inhaling Parmesan fries for the past 10 minutes so she immediately grabbed that and started popping fries into her mouth. “So Vogue?”

If Dolls Could Talk

Location: Outside of Jubilee’s brownstone Timeframe: Afternoon, Sunday, April 24, 2016 Notes: Nadia and Alma use playtime to talk about what would happen if superhuman registration were to become mandatory in New York. TWs for implied abuse, references to neglect, & some troubling unchildlike behavior

Although it had been discussed before, it wasn’t until the Reed Richards power-switch clusterfuck that Alma was moved into Jubilee’s brownstone home. Her room was soundproofed and decorated with care to bring as much cheer into the windowless room as possible. Alma was proud of her Very Own Room and all the things in it---more things than she was used to, undoubtedly---but outside was nice, too, especially when one of her aunties was visiting.

Once Nadia had convinced her that no passersby would know they were mutants, and they would go inside right away if anything seemed dangerous, they sat on the steps in front of the brownstone and played with Alma’s dolls. As was always the case, some were treated more favorably than others. ‘Alma-doll’ typically received the most abuse, but today she was absent. Nadia had been hoping to use the doll to communicate with Alma---she strived to be as kind to the doll as Alma was cruel. If Alma saw herself in the toy and believed she deserved that kind of treatment, then Nadia wanted to show her that she deserved better. Sometimes the young mutant just observed; sometimes she struggled to play along, seeing how it delighted her aunt. Other times, it led to frustration and anger because her aunt was doing it wrong, but she couldn’t explain why.

Nadia couldn’t help but wonder if the doll’s absence had to do with the angry outburst the last time they played with the toys. Perhaps she’d pushed too hard. Maybe Alma wasn’t ready to face those feelings yet, she thought, so Nadia avoided the subject until a half hour of peaceful make-believe had passed.

“Alma, where’s your Alma-doll?” she asked casually---cautiously.

“Practicing,” Alma signed.

“Oh, I see. What is she practicing?”

“Hiding. She’s bad at it, so she has to practice,” she explained matter-of-factly.

“What is she hiding from?”

Alma glanced sideways at Nadia. “People---baselines---so she doesn’t get registered. And probably taken away.”

“Where is she hiding? What do you mean, ‘taken away’?”

Alma took a long breath. She knew what Nadia was doing, and she didn’t know if she wanted to play along, or keep her feelings a secret. “She’s just practice-hiding now. I don’t know where we’ll hide for real yet. Not in New York.”

“Will it be in New Jersey?”

Alma shrugged and focused on detangling her doll’s hair.

“So what are your other dolls doing?”

Alma looked at the dolls as if waiting for their answer. “They’re trying to have lots of fun before they have to go away. Or, well, before I go away. I can’t fit them all in my backpack.”

“Ah, okay. How do you think that would make them feel?”

“Nothing, because they’re dolls. They don’t have feelings unless someone pretends them.” The look on her face said ‘obviously.’

“You’re right...but what if we were pretending they felt some way about it...How would they feel about Alma-doll being gone?”

Alma sighed; this game was no fun at all. “They might be sad, but their lives will be easier.”

Nadia felt a lump rise in her throat as memories from years past came to mind---three goodbye letters, apologizing for leaving, but insisting it was for the best. “Baby Banshee... did your dad tell you you’re going to be hiding again?”

Alma looked at anything but Nadia and went back to discussing the dolls. “Alma-doll is so stupid. She’s such a crybaby! I hate her. I want to smash her head.”

“Hmm...I don’t think being upset makes someone a ‘crybaby’. Bumblebee, can you tell me what your dad said to you?”

“Jacen said not to get attached. This is a vacation, and then we have to go back to reality.” The crown was pulled out of her princess doll’s hair and tossed aside. “He said we can take mind-visits to my memories of here if I miss it, or he can erase it for me if it makes me too sad or makes me want to misbehave.”

“Oh? What did you tell him when he said that?”

“I said I wouldn’t misbehave, and I’m sorry about being sad, and I asked if we can make phone calls or not.” She nudged the plastic crown down the steps with her foot. “He said probably no because Jubilee doesn’t understand and won’t want him to take me, so if we call she’d probably use it to try and find me, and then we wouldn’t be safe. It’s not Jacen’s fault that she can’t be reasonable.”

“I see. Have you told anyone else?”

“No.” She shook her head dramatically. “It would make Aunt Juju upset and the vacation would be over. Don’t tell!”

“You know...I thought I had to leave once, and I did it without warning anyone. I left a letter to say goodbye to Jubilee, Marie, and Eva. I thought it would be better that way, but I was wrong. It made them extra sad that I didn’t talk to them.”

“Does that mean you’ve talked to them about the law? You’re going to have to run away, too.”

“We don’t know that it will be passed, Alma. And if it is...I don’t know what I’ll do, but I will absolutely talk to Jubilee, and Eva, and Marie, and some other people, too, before I make any plans.”

“Jacen says if you don’t leave New York they’ll connect you to your murders eventually, and then you’ll get arrested and go to jail forever. Or someone bad will connect it and they could make you work for them like at The Bad Place and make you a weapon again.”

“You’re getting ahead of yourself,” Nadia said, as reassuringly as she could. “And so is Jacen. That’s why it’s good to talk to different people; you get different perspectives. Believe it or not, Jacen isn’t always right.”

“But Jacen is the one who protects me, like he’s a real dad and like I’m really really important. No one else would do that for me.”

Nadia scooped the young girl up and into her lap. Despite her age, the girl was small and light from the years of neglect, and it struck Nadia once again how fragile and how precious the child in her arms was. “No, Baby...he’s not the only one. I promise. Lots of us want to protect you, and you are real family, do you hear me? Me, and Eva, and Jubilee, and Nana and Papa, and Marie...you have a family, Bumblebee. And families work together and figure things out.”

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble (part 2)

Tagging: Marie Raven & Mystique with mentions of Charlotte Dupree Location: NYC Riots Time Frame: Night, 04.22.16 into early morning 04.23.16 General Notes: Marie gets separated from Charlotte and has a ( not so)surprising encounter 

The night had started off well and easy. Marie and Charlotte had met up for the riot and got down to business, keeping low and taking notes as discreetly as possible on what was going on. It was only when Charlotte gave her commentary that Marie noticed how into the riot she was, how her own voice was slowly becoming hoarse from the chanting. It was exhilarating to be a part of something rather than watching from the sidelines. And, as the riot got increasingly more violent, Marie and Charlotte got separated from each other. 

It was already well into the night and Marie was contemplating on whether or not she should go home. Her next day at work would be hell for one of two reasons: either she would be really tired from the riot or she’d never hear the end of Charlotte’s ranting if she left the riot early. Marie decided to stick it out. She participated as much as she was willing to, keeping her hood on her head to conceal her face. The excitement swelling up inside of Marie was almost frightening. Yes, there was violence happening all around, but people were actually angry about what was going on with the mutants. Violence wasn’t the way to go but at least people were being vocal about it! Marie joined in on another round of chants when someone looped their arm through hers and lead her away from the crowd. “ Hey! Let go of me!” she commanded, beating at the male that was dragging her off to a parking complex. Marie was just about to use her abilities when the man let her go and left her in the darkness among a plethora of cars. She could help but feel annoyed as she heard a faint bit of laughter when a figure appeared.

Mystique smiled proudly at Marie, glad to know that the girl was taking part in the riots. “ You didn’t put up much of a fight just now. I’m surprised. Have you considered my offer?”  She had waited long enough with no word from Marie. It was either a yes or no, she wouldn’t wait forever. “Do not toy with me, Marie.”

She was incredulous. Marie was in a whole crowd of people and yet Mystique managed to pick her out. “Yes,” she replied, getting right to the point. It was late and she didn’t like this set up. It was like they were criminals. Well, Mystique was a criminal, but Marie wouldn’t take park in the criminal encounters. “ I’m layin’ down the rules for you right now, okay? You will not interfere with my life or my friends’ lives. If we are to meet, it will be an agreed arrangement rather than you sendin’ your henchmen to fetch me. I ain’t your slave and I don’t owe you anythin’. I’m not doin’ any jobs. I’m not gettin’ involved with The Brotherhood. One slip up, one mishap, and this is over. Got it?”

The smile remained plastered on her face. “ Of course, dear.” She had expected Marie to establish rules if she were to say yes. But that doesn't matter, everything changes with time. Mystique took a deep breath and moved to stand behind Marie, placing her hands on Marie’s shoulder and making the girl face the outside world. “ Do you see what’s happening out there? Our world is changing and we have the chance to make it for the better rather than the worse. All we have to do is get rid of those who want to harm us. And you plan on sitting behind your computer with your ‘normal’ life while all of this is happening? Don’t you want to be a part of the change?”

Marie chewed her lip, looking out at the slight chaos that was currently taking place. Police would be on the scene soon to bring everything back under control. Mystique was right, Marie did want to be a part o the change. Just not in the way Mystique would’ve wanted her to. “ I’m doin’ my best. I don’t want to hurt anyone. I’m doin’ all the I can, okay? They can’t actually make us register, it’s a violation of our rights-”

“What rights?” Mystique’s smile finally faded “They’ve always treated us like we’re lesser than them. Enough, Marie. The X-men and others have tried peaceful ways of getting us to be treated with respect and that didn’t work. The only thing those people respond to is violence and that’s what this city is giving them.” A small smirk came on to Mystique face but her voice gave nothing away. “ If you want to make a difference, help us. No one has to get hurt. “

Marie sighed, she could tell what Mystique was doing. She wasn’t an idiot. But she was tired of feeling helpless and insignificant. Not every job presented to The Brotherhood resulted in losses of life. Marie knew that. She turned to Mystique and nodded. “If there’s anythin’ I could do, I’ll help. But I’m not riskin’ my life for ya’ll.”

Mystique nodded, feigning maternal understanding. She knew she had Marie right where she wanted her.  “ Of course, darling. We wouldn’t want it any other way....”

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble (Part 1)

Tagging: Marie Raven & Charlotte Dupree Location: The Daily Bugle, NY Time Frame: Evening, 04.22.16 General Notes: Charlotte makes Marie an offer she can’t refuse.

The Bugle always seemed to be buzzing when tensions were high in the city. What could’ve made this election year any better for them? Mutants’ rights being violated. Well, it only seemed like a violation to some people on the floor, other’s were ecstatic that this was happening, but then there were also others who were just into it for the story. Marie sat behind her laptop. hastily typing away. This could be her real big break as a journalist. All she needed was a good story and her name would be plastered on the front page of the Bugle. All it took was one good story.... But she wasn’t the only one thinking that. 

Charlotte sauntered over to Marie, a smirk playing on her face. “Someone’s a busy bee,” she teased, propping herself on top of Marie’s desk. “You’re wasting your time. Everyone’s writing the exact same story. Is it a violation? Is it a precaution? Blah blah blah.” She rolled her eyes and plucked a pencil from Marie’s holder, twirling it between her fingers. “You know Bennet’s not even going to consider our papers for this. There’s a whole lot of people with a whole lot more experience writing the exact same story as us. So... what are we to do about it?”

If looks could kill, Charlotte would’ve been dead. It wasn’t that Marie hated her, it was just that Charlotte always found the perfect time to annoy Marie. Granted, the brunette hadn’t been in the best mood while dealing with her issues with Mystique and coming to work to hear about all the mutant nonsense. Sometimes she felt like Charlotte planned these things on purpose. Marie made a big show of ceasing her typing as she spun her chair to face her coworker. “ Please don’t sit on my desk,” she requested, but Charlotte just kept going on and on. “Alright, I get it. We’re nothin’ compared to the vets. You got any brilliant ideas on how to change that?” She didn’t actually expect Charlotte to have something to say since Marie felt like they’d pretty much be taking the back seat on this one. 

“Imagine it,” she began, doing a grand gesture with her hand, “ A picture on the front page of the Bugle under the title ‘New York Rising’; a story from within one of the riots taking place in the city. And, of course, both of our names being credited for co-authoring such an amazing exposé” Charlotte shot Marie a dazzling smile before she continued. “I’ve got some friends and they’ve been talking about this big riot that’s brewing. It’s going to be intense and how better to get a story on it than from the inside? Let’s not wait until after it happens to report about it, let’s be in the heart of it. “ She had never personally been one for mutants but this could be a big deal. “ Now, before you get all high and mighty with me, just think about it. Whoever gets sent to these riots from the newspapers aren’t getting involved, they’re watching from the outside and reporting from there. We’d be in it, a part of it. A split perspective on what could possibly be one of the biggest riots in the city. The best journalists do whatever it takes to get their stories, don’t they?”

She wouldn’t lie, the offer was definitely appealing. And Charlotte did have a point about those who were already reporting from the riots. No one wanted a lawsuit because they sent their workers into the eye of the storm. They’d be doing this on their own. “ We could get fired,” she started, listing off the most apparent flaws that Charlotte seemed to have glossed over. “We could get hurt or killed.” Those were all Marie could think of. The idea seemed brilliant regardless of the cons. She was sure Charlotte would go ahead and do this on her own regardless of Marie’s answer but Marie was still curious. “ Why are ya’ comin’ to me with this? I’m no agreein’ to it.... I just want to know why you aren’t goin’ to someone else.” 

“Because you’re as good of a writer as I am and you’ve got passion for these kinds of things. You know me, I just follow a story, but you’ve got the heart that could actually make this good. The worst that could happen is that we either die or get fired. I think that’s a pretty good toss up.” Charlotte was only partially kidding. She was willing to do whatever she needed to to get on top and if this was it then so be it. Don’t you want this for yourself?”

Marie chewed on her bottom lip and tapped her fingers against her desk. She did want this. Getting well known for writing about something so dear to her heart? Why wouldn’t she want it? Why wasn’t she willing to do whatever it takes to get it? “ One riot. We don’t get too involved and we don’t attract too much attention to ourselves. Deal?”

Charlotte’s smile lit up her whole face as she nodded. “ And if we get separated? Continue with the story. See it out to the end.” She didn’t want to say that she knew Marie would give it but she really did have a good feeling about this. She took Marie’s hand and shook it. “ Deal.”
