Bundesliga FOTD #57: Leagues Overview
Part III - Regionalliga
…
Introduction
- The Regionalliga is the third-highest level of professional women’s football in Germany.
- It was founded in 2004 and is divided into five regional leagues: Regionalliga West, Regionalliga Nord, Regionalliga Nordost, Regionalliga Südwest, and Regionalliga Süd.
- Regionalliga West consists of 14 teams and Regionalliga Süd of 13 teams. Regionalliga Nord, Nordost and Südwest each consist of 12 teams.
Promotion & Relegation
- The team that finishes first in Regionalliga Süd is crowned “Regionalmeisterin Süd” and is directly promoted to the second division.
- The other two promotion spots are decided through two-legged playoffs. In these playoffs, the champion of Regionalliga Nord (for instance, can change!) faces the champion of Regionalliga Nordost, while the champion of Regionalliga West faces the champion of Regionalliga Südwest. The winners of the playoffs are promoted, while the losers remain in the same division.
- The number of relegated teams depends on how many teams relegated from the second division are assigned to each Regionalliga. For example, if all three teams relegated from the second division geographically belong to Regionalliga Nord, then more teams from Regionalliga Nord will be relegated. It also depends on whether the league “loses” a team to the second division or whether that team remains in the league.
- However, usually, the 2-3 lowest-ranked teams relegate. They then have the opinion to join their respective Oberliga.
- Promoted, remaining and relegated teams must all obtain a license for the league in which they are qualified to compete in the next season.

Part II - Zweite Bundesliga
…
Introduction
- The “Zweite Frauen-Bundesliga” is the second-highest professional women’s football league in Germany.
- It was founded in 2004 as a two-tier league & has existed in its current format since 2021. It currently consists of 14 teams.
Promotion & Relegation
- The team that finishes in first place is crowned the “Zweitligameisterin” & is promoted to the first division. The team that finishes second is also promoted to the first division.
- The team that finishes third remains in the second division. There are no playoffs.
- The teams that finish in 12th, 13th and 14th place are relegated and therefore leave the Zweite Bundesliga. They have the option to apply for a license for their respective Regionalliga. All remaining teams must apply for a new license for the second division / a license for the Bundesliga.
- Reserve teams of Bundesliga clubs cannot be promoted. If they finish first or second, the promotion spot is passed on to the teams finishing third or fourth. Reserve teams, however, can be relegated.

Part I - Bundesliga
…
Introduction
- The “Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga” is the highest professional women’s football league in Germany.
- She was founded in 1989 as a two-tier league & exists in her current form since 1997. Since the 2025/26 season, she contains 14 teams.
Qualifications & Relegation
- The team that secures the first spot is crowned “Deutsche Meisterin” and directly qualifies for the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) and the DFB Super Cup.
- The team that finishes second either directly qualifies for the UWCL or (as it currently is) for the UWCL qualifiers. If the same team wins the league and the cup, the second-placed team also qualifies for the DFB Super Cup.
- The team that finishes third qualifies for the UWCL qualifiers.
- The team that finishes in spot 12 remains in the league. There aren’t any relegation play-offs.
- The teams that finish in spots 13 & 14 exit the Bundesliga but have the possibility to purchase a license for the second division.
- The teams who don’t exit the Bundesliga have to purchase a new license for the first division. Without a license, a club isn’t allowed to play - even if it rightfully qualified for a league.
