It's Chinese New Year today and all the Chinese restaurants and businesses are closed. Streets are quiet in Kuantan (well, except for the intermittent sound of deafening firecrackers).
A small Malay stall in the neighborhood was open for business. This is a typical Malay breakfast/lunch dish with spicy stewed chicken (Ayam Rendang) served with rice (Nasi). It's also accompanied with sweet and sour pickled cucumbers and carrots. Something like this costs usually no more than 4-5 ringgits. Here it's served on a sheet of wax paper (sometimes on a banana or pandan leaf). Kaffir (lime) leaves in the stew adds a refreshing touch to the strong sweet and spicy flavoring. Serving pickles with a stewed dish is a practice found in many parts of the world.
