Cage the Elephant: Tell Me I’m Pretty
This album started off on a very strong note. In the opening song (Cry Baby), he sings the line “open up your eyes or life will pass you by”. I absolutely love that saying, especially to start the new year! The lyric reminds me of my father who passed away from cancer in 2012. He always lived every day as if it was his last and I’ve always wanted to maintain that ideology in my life. This was a gentle reminder that time doesn’t stop and I should always cease the day!
Cage the Elephant’s music is very reminiscent of the Black Keys and Alt Jay. The muted microphone sound brings me vivid memories of listening to the Black Keys in my sister’s Jetta while driving around San Diego. The song “Trouble” immediately struck a chord with my ear as I recalled Alt-J’s Breezeblocks with the piano pounding one chord in both songs. It was very exciting seeing this overlap of music that I wouldn’t have recognized had I not been familiar with Alt-J or the Black Keys.
The album ends extremely abruptly which left me feeling a little unresolved. The last lyric of the album was “I’m trying to catch a feel” which is not a very concluding line. However, it left me wanting to hear more Cage the Elephant. Now I’m just tense waiting for the next album to drop!!
