MTV’s latest season of Are You The One has made television history: it’s the first series to feature an entirely bisexual+ cast.

Season eight of the reality dating series — dubbed “Come One Come All” — debuted in tandem with the worldwide Pride celebrations, showcasing a cast of 16 singles for whom “the one” could be anyone, as the show’s slogan states.

In a reality television landscape largely built on heteronormative ideals, there’s something groundbreaking about watching contestants not only speak freely about their identities but engage in a dating construct usually reserved for heterosexual couples.

The cast features some of the most dynamic people shown on television, all of whom engage in honest conversations about their gender and sexual identities.

'Are You The One' Is Giving Queer Folks The Chance At Love, Sex, And Everything In Between

If you told me I would be using the phrase “emotionally mature” to describe a mainstream dating show on cable television, I would have laughed in your face. But that’s exactly what this season of Are You The One? has been.

Are You The One? Season 8 promised to give us some major LGBTQ+ representation with an entire cast of sexually fluid individuals. But the show has given us so much more — vulnerability, introspection, and some honest-to-goodness human growth.

here is an excerpt from chapter 2:

He winds up sitting back down where Lisa found him, staring into space and trying to be as quiet and as boring as possible. He hears someone approach, and he tries to stay as still as he possibly can, like maybe they'll think he's asleep.

"Hello, Dean," Castiel says, and Dean jumps a fucking mile.

"Jesus Christ. Warn a guy," he says, glancing over at him, but his eyes skim past him, beyond him, looking for that cameraman. Castiel follows his gaze, looking over his shoulder, and then turns back.

"He left. I told him Gabriel was trying to get people to go skinnydipping with him."

Dean doesn't know what to say to that, to how Castiel knew what he was thinking. He makes some kind of noise and turns away, rubbing his hands in front of him. The thing is, he hasn't super paid attention to what Castiel's been up to, busy with Lisa and all. He matched with one of those British guys, the tall, lanky one. Dean couldn't see it, but, you know. Not his business.

Except it could be. It could be his business.

It isn't though. Definitely not his business.

"Are you okay?"

Dean glances over at him sharply. "Why? You trying to swoop in?"

Castiel had been standing with a slight curve to his shoulders; he loses that now, shifting his posture, and he tilts his head at Dean.

"I was just asking. You seemed upset."

Well, now he feels like a giant fucking asshole, so that's a fun added bonus to his day. He sighs hard and scrubs his hands over his face, and he leans back in the deck chair, slowly letting some of his tension drain.

"Sorry. I'm--sorry. It's been a long fucking day."

After he drops his hands, he keeps his eyes turned upward, looking at the stars. He tries not to guess what Castiel is going to do. When Castiel chooses to come sit next to him, he tries not to have a thought about it.

"You picked a good spot. People don't really bother me out here. But then," he pauses, and Dean looks over in time to see him shrug, rueful, "maybe it's less about the spot and more about me."

Dean's mind tries to grab ahold of that and instead only manages to fumble the idea, over and over, as he tries to make sense of it.

"You?" is all he manages.

Castiel shrugs again. "I'm not really reality TV material. At least, not the marketable kind."

Are you crazy? You're smoking hot, Dean could say. He bites his lip.

"So why are you here?" he asks instead.

Castiel takes a long breath now, leaning his head back the way Dean had been, his eyes drifting up to the sky. "I'm not really sure," he lands on, and he seems to sit with that for a minute before he turns to Dean, and now his face is angled toward the light, and Dean gets a good view of those eyes, burning brighter than anything else out here. "Why are you here?"

Dean swallows thickly. Before he finds an answer, he finds a shrug, casual, cool. "To find love," he says with his best TV announcer voice, giving his best TV announcer smile.

Castiel might hesitate before he smiles. Dean tries not to think about it--the smile or the hesitation--and he gets up out of the chair.

"Thanks, Cas," he says before he leaves, walking away from the quiet of that spot, and he has to concentrate to walk normally, to not speed away like every part of him is screaming at him to do.
