This reminds me of those scenes in movies where the wife kills the rich husband and when the police arrives the grieving widow is wearing a long silk robe lmaooo
Mini retexturing tutorial
For @azuremermaid! It’s probably not the best way of doing things, but it’s been working for me. You can apply this to braids / just generally remaking the alpha as well! c:
1. Open your hair texture diffuse - you need to know exactly where the textures are placed on the UV, so CTRL+click the alpha to highlight aaaand ...
2. Paste as a new layer! I like to fill in the layer underneath with a solid black just for extra clarity. It helps to see where exactly the textures are!
3. Open your dreadlock hair texture - I usually use the Uni Life dreads ‘cause there’s a good variation. c: Do the same thing you did with the original texture (copy alpha, paste to new layer, fill layer underneath with darker colour) so you can see the individual and groups of locs.
4. Copy and paste sections onto the hair you’re retexturing, adjusting them to fit the original textures. It’s suuuuper important to fit the new textures within these as the mesh planes have probably been fitted to these exact dimensions. If your texture goes further than the meshes edge, it’ll just clip the end off and you’ll have a weird straight edge at the bottom!
5. You can get rid of the copy of the original alpha now if you want! I usually just hide it (just in case I need to tweak the textures later on).
6. Click on your channels tab and delete the alpha. If you leave this, the locs will be sort of... chopped up onto the original hair, and you’ll end up with strands textured with weird mashed up dreadlocks.
7. Merge all of your new dreadlock textures onto one layer (with a transparent background), select with CTRL+click again. Click the lil’ new alpha mask layer and it’ll make a brand new alpha layer for you!
8. Import into your program of choice - I usually use s3pe because my TSRW is an asshole but it’s easier to use for tutorials soooo there we go~ You’ll have a - hopefully! - working diffuse for your dreadlocks! Unfortunately, the control layer will still be for the original texture, and doesn’t really work that well.
9. Merge your grey diffuse layer with the black background layer and use AWT’s control action to make your bright green highlight channel. Whenever I try it on the dreadlock texture the green comes out a bit too much, so I like to tweak it a little bit on the histogram to get it juuuust right.
10. Add your red + blue channels for the roots and hair tips! I usually just keep this simple - for the red, I draw strands with a fine brush and then use the ‘motion blur’ tool to make them more natural-looking. The blue is literally just blobs with a huge brush across the bottom of the textures, then gaussian blurred and set to a mix of hard light and soft light. When you’re done, save!
11. Import your control and you’ve got your final hair! You can add a specular and bump maps if you want to do more and it’s supported by the original hair, of course, but this will be enough for most!
