tell me about B Square

OUGH ok so. there are two interpretations of B Square, one from the original book, one from the film. and to me mashing the two of them together makes for an interesting character

(grouping these two asks together because they’re related!)

In the book, after A Square is imprisoned, B Square goes to visit him as often as he can, providing him company and listening to his inane ramblings about a Third Dimension. He doesn’t believe his brother, but it’s still obvious that he cares so much for him, continuing to visit him, despite what effect it must have on both his well-being and his reputation. Having to see the person you grew up with your entire life diminished into nothing more but a raving man locked behind bars, yet continuing to hold out hope everyday that maybe something, something can save this. It’s impossible, he’s in life imprisonment for trying to spread ideas that go against the Circle’s word; but still, his brother isn’t a bad man, he knows this. He has to be down in there somewhere, beneath the mad, heretic spouting man that anybody else would be ashamed to associate themselves with. How long did he continue visiting him? How long did it take for his mind to numb to his brother’s words, hearing nothing but a meaningless hum and a reminder that their life will never go back to how it used to be? He’ll never understand, and he doesn’t want to; he just wants his brother back. He will never listen to the truth, just like the rest; he only tolerates putting it on as background noise to placate his brother.

Now, in the film, he’s nearly the exact opposite; when A Square begins raving on about the Third Dimension, he completely ignores any sense of identity he has to him. It doesn’t matter that this is his brother, that all he’s trying to do is save him from prison; he has a tunnel vision and only sees a man that is going against the doctrine that’s been instilled into him from birth. To me this whole character is inseparable from President Circle; he is the one who’s stripped B Square of any personal connections he might have left, turning him into a man who thinks he’s on the right side of history by aiding to take innocent lives. He has the wool pulled over his eye, and even though he could remove it at anytime, he’s been conditioned into thinking that the wool is beneficial to helping him assist a great leader that never falters.

Combining these two; B Square still feels this loyalty toward his brother, but is as equally loyal to President Circle. What does he do? Does he betray the country he has dedicated his entire life to, spilled the blood of hundreds of lives for, or does he betray the only one who he would dedicate the rest of his life to visiting, without any hopes of him getting better? It’s a losing battle either way. He’ll either get properly executed for helping a heretic, or be weighed down everyday by sending his own brother to his death. One of them will die, and, unfortunately, he must choose the one that will lead to the greater good of the country.

Only a little related, but in the book B Square visited A Square like every week in prison, even after seven years. Which is insane!! Theres so much there!!!

How does B Square feel about A Square during all that time? About his experience? Every time A Square recounts the story, B Square refutes it and refuses to believe it, but still he keeps coming back. How does he feel about his story slowly warping over time? About seeing the various states hes in while recounting it? A says B never believes him, but after half a decade B must feel some type of way about what happened. How does he feel about seeing his brother become less enthused and slowly go insane?

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! I’ve been enjoying the time with my family and now it is drawing to a close. Tonight, we take out my mother-in-law for her birthday dinner and for New Year’s Eve we head back over to my brother-in-laws house for one last night of celebrating … to ring in the new year.
