Dos and Don'ts for Your B1 Exam
The B1 Exam forms part of the requirements when one applies for a citizenship or an indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom. It has two parts, the first speaking and the second listening. It basically aims to assess the taker’s basic command, understanding and use of the English language in terms of conversation and communication.
Given as it is a requirement in your application, passing it is very important. To do so, you might want to consider reading into the following do’s and don’ts for your B1 Citizenship exam.
Do dress appropriately. It is after all not a casual event. You want to present yourself suitably to the examiner. Although it will not affect your scores as this is not a job interview, doing so can help you gain confidence. If you look and feel good with what you wear, you tend to act more confidently and surely. You’ll need that when you speak up.
Don’t be a know it all. No one’s perfect that’s for sure. Although one must not use that as an excuse to fail, you should still admit that there are things you will not know about. There may be words that you do not know the meaning of or you may have barely heard or understood the question given to you. Don’t pretend that you understood and risk making yourself look like a fool. Ask and be polite about it.
Do arrive on time. Exams are scheduled. Tardiness is greatly looked down. You may not be granted permission to take the exam anymore if you failed to show up on time. You’ve prepared for it so you might as well come early and take it.
Don’t make unnecessary movements and mannerisms. Some people have the habit of tapping their feet while they talk, pinching their nose, scratching their head and all that. Avoid doing so because it can be distracting and they do not look good.
Do prepare for the test. Even if you are already well versed with the language and completely comfortable with it, it still pays to prepare and practice. Brush up on your lessons. Read study guides. Practice on your own or with the help of a friend.
Don’t let anxiety and nerves beat you. When taking the B1 exam, confidence is necessary. You need it when you converse. Nerves are normal but do not let it get the better of you. Do breathing exercises beforehand and think positive.
