You always joked that you simply “had deep pockets”

One time when you and Jake got taken hostage, it took them 20 minutes to find all of the weapons hidden on you, like the bad guys just kept finding them

Them: “Is that everything?”

You: “Yes..”

Jake: “Why do they keep asking you if you’ve said yes several times before and they still found more knives?”

(and did they find them all? you’d never tell)

And when it came to the Halloween Heists...

You were never short of completely and absolutely overprepared

They actually had to make a rule in later years that you had to be searched before the game because you kept smuggling tools and weapons into the game

You: “A confetti cannon is not a weapon.”

Rosa: “With you it is.”

Rosa had a ton of respect for you, though, because she’s lowkey the same way

The squad taking bets on who has more stuff hidden on them

I’m picturing like a scene where you each take a turn pulling out a weapon and it just keeps getting more ridiculous as you one-up each other

Rosa: *pulls out an axe*

You: *takes out an even bigger sword*

As much as the squad loved you, they always fought over who had to team up with you on events that involved security checkpoints

Because getting you through security took forever

The metal detector would just keep going off and you’d be like “oh yeah I forgot about the knife in this secret pocket on my pants.”

“Alright, here’s the school. Remember what I told you?” Rosa said as she stopped the car in front of your school building. Since Kevin was away on business and Holt had to work early, he had asked her if she could drop you off at school that morning. On the car ride to school, you had told Rosa about your bullying situation at school that had been going on for the past couple of weeks.

“Never throw the first punch, and if someone hits me, I hit them right back.” you replied as you slipped your arms through the straps on your backpack.

“See you back at the precinct.” Rosa said, offering you one of her rare smiles as you stepped out of the car, shutting the door behind you. Ever since a couple months ago you would visit the precinct after school and do your homework in the break room on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“Alright, bye mom.” you said, stopping dead in your tracks two seconds after the words fell past your lips as it dawned on you what you just said out loud. You said it so surprising casually as if it was normal for you. Which it was not.

You felt a knot begin to tie itself in your stomach and your face heat up in embarrassment. You loved your dads, and you were more than grateful to them for raising you. But overtime, you came to view Rosa as sort of the mom you never had, but you never dared to let anyone know that. Especially not the detective herself. You hesitantly looked back at Rosa, and you were unable to read her expression.

“Uh-... gotta go, bye!” You stammered a bit, your face flushed with embarrassment before you quickly made your way to the school building, your knuckles turning white on your backpack straps as you prayed that no one heard that. You had never been so eager to get to school in your life.

Rosa remained in the car and watched you leave, taking a moment to fully process what had just happened. You didn’t see it, for you were obviously in a rush to get to class, but a little smile tugged at the corners of Rosa’s mouth.

“You’re so fucking stupid, Jake! Why would you do that?! You nearly got shot! I nearly got shot!” You shrugged off your bullet proof vest, shoving the raid gear in the right places. You were angry. Angry because you’d been scared and worried and Jake didn’t seem to understand at all.

“I was doing my job!”

“Charging head first into a drug den is not your job! Being cautious, arresting people, not getting shot is your job!” You turn on him, pointing. He doesn’t understand, how could he understand? The sheer fear at the thought that he might have been hit, might have died was...you don’t even want to think about it. 

“It’s not like I died!” 

“But you could have!” You stop, breathe deep. You close your eyes for a moment before looking at him, you don’t want to yell anymore. “Jake...I don’t want you to get hurt...” 

“It’s part of our job...we..”

“Jake, I care about you. Romantic stylez. I don’t want to see you get shot. I know it’s part of the job but...” You watch his face change; shock, realisation, understanding, seriousness. He takes a few steps closer to you, hands grabbing yours, holding them in his own.

“I like you. Romantic stylez too...I can’t guarantee i’ll never get hurt, but...i’ll try to be more careful.” You know he likes you, you’ve both known for ages, never said anything, but know. It’s not a confession that shocks either of you, simply confirms his dedication to doing better, to trying to be safer. 

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

“Noice.” You joke, imitating his usual ridiculous language to lighten the air. Nothing like Jake Peralta to make you go from completely serious to silly in mere seconds. 

“Smort.”

“THE PRECINCT REACTING TO YOU HAVING A PROSTHETIC ARM (BROOKLYN NINE-NINE)”

"That's so cool!" Jake exclaimed as soon as he realized. "I hope that's not weird for me to say. But come on, a detective with an awesome arm like that?"

"There's like at least five comic books just waiting to be written," Boyle said, jumping in.

"Thanks guys," you said, laughing. "It doesn't shoot lasers though, if that's what you're thinking."

"We talking about y/n's arm?" Rosa asked.

"You knew?" Jake said.

"Yeah. Tried to convince them to replace it with an ax hand. No dice."

"Ooh, Ax-Hand and the Men in Black," Boyle pitched. "Not the aliens, Men in Black. Mysterious men in black."

"Sounds good, but I think I'll stick to..." you gestured at the case on your desk. "Whatever the hell this is." Boyle and Rosa returned to their desks, you sharing a smile with Amy who's desk was right by yours. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Jake rolling his chair over to you, ducking his head as he lowered his voice.

"Hey, how do you feel about pranks?"

"Love them. Why?"

“Is it just me, or did a child Rosa just walk in here?” Charles whispered to Jake, rolling his chair over to his friend’s desk.

“Oh my God,” Jake said. “This could be some sort of parallel universe where--”

“Hey,” Rosa said, walking in behind you, helping you take off a leather jacket that was identical to hers and showing you to her desk. “Y/n is going to be hanging out here for today. I already cleared it with Holt.”

“Wait, that’s y/n?!” Jake exclaimed. “I mean... they’re like a mini you right down to the sunglasses.”

“Well... yeah... isn’t that the point of having kids?” Rosa deadpanned. “So that you can have a tiny army?”

“A clone army,” Charles murmured to himself and nodded at Jake wisely.

“Hey y/n,” Amy said greeting you, returning from lunch with Gina. “No school today?”

“Nope,” you said, cracking open your backpack. “Thank God. I can’t stand those guys.”

“Who, your teachers?” Amy asked. “Come on, there has to be one--”

“They’re talking about the other kids,” Rosa said.

“Smart,” Gina said, not looking up from her phone as she talked. “You can’t trust them anyways.”

You could never sneak into the precinct unnoticed. Even when you rushed to the elevator to beat your father up the stairs. Even without Kevin. The moment you stepped foot into the bullpen, Jake noticed immediately, usually followed by a cry of “mini-Holt!”

You always rolled your eyes, while Amy admonished Jake to leave you alone, you obviously just wanting to find a quiet place to do your homework.

“Wait, y/n, come work over here,” Jake said, just as Kevin arrived from the stairs. “Kevin!”

“They’re here to do homework, not chat with you,” Amy told Jake.

“Yeah... but...” Jake started as you sat down next to Amy’s desk and pulled a few binders out of your backpack. “Okay, real talk,” he whispered, grabbing your attention. “Who does the yardwork? Does Holt? I’m trying to imagine him on a ride-on lawn mower and it’s not happening but I wish it were real--”

“Jake--”

“He cuts the grass with scissors,” you said, just loud enough for Jake to hear.

“No...” Jake answered, grinning. “You’re joking.”

You exchanged a shy smile with Amy, both of you shaking your heads as you returned to your homework.

“Okay, and here’s one of dad hula-hooping,” you said, handing your phone to Amy so that she could get a closer look at the photo. You were sitting in the breakfast nook, giggling over appetizers as other members of the Nine-Nine milled around the kitchen and living room.

“No way,” Amy said, zooming in.

Holt entered the kitchen, talking with Jake and Amy shoved your phone back into your hands, her eyes widening as she waved her hands. “I feel like I shouldn’t be seeing this. It feels like I’m breaking some sort of rule.”

“You mean the media blackout that dad imposes when he and Kevin are at fitness class? Yeah, probably.” You shrugged. “But you’re basically family anyways, so it’s okay.”

“You consider me part of your family?” Amy asked, putting her hand over her heart, touched. “Oh, y/n.”

“Of course I do,” you said. “You’re like… basically an older sister to me.” You looked around at the party. “If that’s not weird.”

“Not weird at all,” Amy said, smiling. “I’m honored."

hi! just tossing this fic under a keep reading bc of the topic matter

"Woah, hey, I promise I won't freak out," Jake said when you told him, had to tell him when he saw your injuries. "Just..." His brow was furrowed with concern as he looked at you. "Is this what's been going on?"

You nodded, afraid you would start crying if you tried to speak.

Jake tilted his head, his expression softening as he held out his arms. You nearly collapse into the hug, your breath hitching as you did so, the tears finally bursting past the dam you had once so carefully constructed.

"It's okay," Jake said. "It's going to be okay." He blinked back tears himself, looking up at the ceiling as he held you tight. "Let's get that cleaned up," he finally said. "Amy has a first aid kit in her bag, I'll go get it."

"Please don't tell--"

"I won't," Jake said. "I won't. We'll figure this out together."
