50 years ago ... Apollo 14 lunar spaceflight mission. The 1971 Apollo 14 mission was commanded by NASA veteran astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard, one of the original “Mercury 7″ astronauts. During the Apollo 14 lunar walks, the astronauts hand-pulled a kind of wheelbarrow, the MET - Modular Equipment Transporter, which carried geologic sample tools. This two-wheeled portable work bench was used to stow lunar samples and Shepard had the idea to carry a make-shift Iron-6 golf club attached to a geologic sample tool in order to play a few golf balls on the lunar surface! On August 26, 1971 Shepard was promoted as US Navy Rear Admiral and became the first U.N. delegate who has been on the Moon. Note Alan Shepard wore his Gold “ Apollo 11 tribute “ Omega Speedmaster chronograph which most Gemini & Apollo astronauts were gifted during the November 25, 1969 Astronaut Appreciation Dinner in the Warwick hotel.
