I am so sorry to hear that. @baapi-makwa was a good friend to everyone and will always be missed. Their absence is felt in the native community and the art community everyday. I spoke with his dad a few times over the years and shared with him some art Ken had drawn that he'd never seen. I hope it brought him peace. Love and condolences to the Andrews family and all of their friends near and far.

are those bear drawing you are reblogging a closed style? are they a specific culture? theyre really cute, could a white person draw that style too?

Those drawings were done by the marvelous Ojibwe artist @baapi-makwa and are certainly culturally inspired. In the past they were open to (some of) their art being used under certain circumstances, but as you can no longer ask them, I would advise folks simply don't.

While not all of their art consists of technically "closed" designs, if you are a white person, I would suggest looking into the floral styles of European folk art for inspiration as these would be more suiting, less appropriative, and also thematic of animal + floral.

The Fiance surprised me by making @baapi-makwa‘s frybread recipe because I haven’t had frybread since moving out here many years ago and was having a particularly bad week. Ours turned out a little puffier than I recall (we were having and over-stickiness issue and compensated with more flour -- difference in altitude may be contributing) but just as delicious and comforting. 10/10 thank you for sharing the recipe! Now I can request a taste of home anytime.
