“hey...” nico was appreciative that she’d stuck around though everyone else had long since cleared out of the loft. he figured she would, maybe hoped as much though admittedly he’d avoided getting too close to her while they were all playing drinking games and through the movie they’d watched afterwards. he didn’t want to be too affectionate in front of their friends, lest they both end up getting harassed over it when they were trying to be relaxed about what was happening between them. it was casual, but good. something he hoped didn’t need to be discussed. reaching for her, he slid his arm around her waist, pulling her smaller form towards him. “you look beautiful right now. did i tell you that yet tonight?” his other hand was reaching out, pushing her hair behind her ear.

before emily, oliver never thought he was good enough at any of the romantic stuff. he was perpetually single, mostly because he politely declined most offers for more. he never insinuated anything but casual fun when he was with anyone before her, but something about the blonde had captured him and tugged him in. it was like coming up for air after being underwater for far too long. it all made sense, the way people spoke about relationships. he understood fucking love songs on the radio now. hell, he turned them up and hummed along, mouthed the words to her with his hand resting on her thigh, even. that was why it didn’t bother him in the slightest to have a hill of lingerie piled over his arm. he’d booked them a hotel room in the city on a whim and now, of course, was taking her shopping because she didn’t have anything packed. did she really need this much underwear for two days? no, but spoiling her felt as good for him as it seemed to for her. “you know i’m making you try every single one of these on, right?” he asked, leaning down to mutter in her ear as she looked at another lacy number.

things had been different, as of late. quieter. nico’s apartment had taken on an emptiness he didn’t quite recognise, as if he could truly see maeve’s absence in a way he hadn’t with anyone else he’d maintained a casual relationship with. he supposed that no one before her had kept much at his place, since things had never lasted all that long, but he kept expecting to see little parts of her like he usually did. and don’t even get him started on the dreams. two of them, since they’d seen each other, one where he woke up stretching out in bed, thinking she was there only to find empty space. it was... embarrassing, to say the least, but easy to hide behind an air of normalcy. he’d been working as much as he could, going on hikes with his dog and his camera, taking plenty of photographs and replying to any and all emails at the speed of light. a night out had seemed like a good idea when one of his friends had suggested it, until he’d gotten out and realised the group of friends was much larger than had been expressed to him. in fact, he spied a dark head of hair within two minutes of entering the few booths their friend group were sharing. instantly he was asking for shots, taking two to start himself off, as he tried his best not to watch her. when she caught notice of him, he lifted his hand in an awkward wave, giving a small, nervous smile.
the forest was alive with cicadas, the balmy evening making ace almost regret the leather jacket he slapped over every outfit that found its way on his body. sighing as he paused behind a tree, he glanced at the clearing, squinting as he watched for a good few minutes. he had to make sure no one else was there, he had to make sure none of them were there. finally, he gave in and crossed past the rest of the trees until he reached it: the literal scorched earth, the mostly burned through candles with dripping red and black wax and the symbol in the centre, painted into the grass with something red. this was the beginning of what had been happening in their town, he was certain of that, he just needed someone else to believe him. pulling out his phone, he began to take pictures, lamenting the poor lighting as his flash lit up the dark in front of him. movement caught his eye by a stack of rocks at the edge of the clearing and ace paused, narrowing his eyes at the figure. turning on the flashlight on his phone, he lifted it in that direction, immediately recognising the person he was illuminating. “what the fuck are you doing here?”

the rain wasn’t heavy outside, but the second grayson caught sight of her in his doorway, he was taking steps back, ushering her inside so she was out of it. “don’t you own an umbrella?” he teased in the form of a greeting, wondering why she’d show up without warning like this. he wouldn’t complain about seeing her, it’d been a couple days and he’d been meaning to text her, but he’d become preoccupied with a paper that was due the day prior. “did something happen?” he asked, as he shut the door behind her, eyes scanning her expression to see if he could read any obvious clues.

“if you wanna be pissed at anyone, you can be pissed at me, alright?” emery didn’t even know how he’d found himself in this position. within a day they had lost their team captain and the responsibility had fallen on him, something he’d never wanted in the first place. he loved hockey, but he’d always felt caught between that and his major, his busy schedule exhausting him by the end of each week. one of the two rinks at their college was destroyed and it would take real time to be fixed, meaning that every figure skater at their college wanted to murder his team... mostly because, it was their captain’s fault in the first place it had happened. he was still wrapping his head around it, how a guy with his whole future in front of him would make such a dumb decision to impregnate someone’s sister and then ghost her, but it wasn’t exactly like he could ask about it. the douchebag had probably fled campus by now, back home where his parents would coddle him and solve the problem. “i know this is something we have to figure out, but it sucks for us too. look, we’re throwing a party tonight.” an executive decision, one he’d made upon seeing how wound up this girl was. “something to get our minds off everything. you’re welcome to come. i actually insist.”
