Day 5: "A Collaborative Buddy"
Saisha Rao Voodi
In the realm of collaboration, the adjective that resonates is "collaborative." A collaborative buddy signifies a partnership built on mutual support, shared goals, and a commitment to each other's success. Drawing inspiration from the insightful reading in AIA Guide 6: Mentorship & Sponsorship, I have decided to commit to the action of fostering collaboration within my professional network this year.
The chosen commitment involves actively seeking opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, peers, and mentors to create an environment that nurtures shared learning and growth. I am ready to commit to this action because collaboration, as highlighted in the reading, not only enhances individual development but also contributes to the collective success of the team. By fostering collaboration, I aim to create a network of supportive relationships that transcend traditional mentor-mentee dynamics, promoting an inclusive and interconnected professional community.
Our last day was as usual learning about site clean up and how to place the AJS beans and LBL timbers. We learned about installing the installation foam for post gap. It is so amazing the over float dry foam. They look like an abstract sculpture. The last day was a lighter day. Learning how to use the nail gun is my exciting and favorite thing.
I am very grateful to all the people on the site and office that I got to shadow. I appreciate all the interesting activities and gain the new knowledges.
Keyla's Bonus Post
Keyla's Last Day at Perkins & Will
Today is a bittersweet ending to our externship at Perkins & Will. I spent the whole week commuting to P&W because I live in Fitchburg MA. Which is about an hour and a half train ride, it gave me time to reflect on the people that we've met, the places we visited, and the knowledge that we picked up because of these wonderful people! At first, I felt nervous since I didn't have prior experience and my knowledge of the industry wasn't much, but Jennifer's vibrant personality and transparency cleared most of my worries. This externship wasn't a test that I had to pass, it was an eye-opening learning experience that introduced me to so many talented people!
On our last day, we met with Kara and Carolina who presented to us the Monte Rey Tec project which are four buildings for student housing on campus. The design process was also another example of having to have trust in the community that you're designing for so that you can give them a space that matches their lives. They mentioned how politics affected the progress of the project which was interesting to think about.
We then met with Jennifer, Sergio, Brad, Octavia, Juliette, and Stephen to review our resumes and portfolios. Angela has amazing work, from digital fluency, drafting, model making, sculpting, etc. It was wonderful to see someone so dedicated to their work! Based on the feedback they received they have enough to apply to Perkins & Will! When it came to my portfolio there was somethings that I needed to include although I expected that since I just finished my first year. They have also informed us that showing work outside of academics that shows your personality makes you stand out of the applicants. All of the advice they gave to us was truly helpful and I am thankful for the time they dedicated to review our work!
Lastly, we did a final tour of the office and spoke about our experience together. Jennifer gave me an umbrella because it was storming outside, I'm glad to have something physical to remember the amount of kindness and dedication people at Perkins & Will have. It was truly an honor to join Angela in this program and have the opportunity to view the industry in a different light.
Thank you!!!
