Attentive Buddies
I hadn’t thought of having several mentors as a board of directors, as the Mentorship and Sponsorship guide suggest on 6.11.
I have not formalized my relationships with my teachers and former teachers to a mentorship level. I wouldn’t have known how to go about it. That might be something I would look into this spring.
As for mentoring others, I welcome opportunities. The latest instance was as Conversational partner. A program offered by the BAC ‘s Learning Resource Center to non-native English speakers who wants to improve their English in an informal setting. Pairings are based on common interests, programs being pursued and availability, online or in person.
My goal this year would be to find mentoring opportunities, first at school and then possibly extend it to Boston.
Thank you Bazam & Umma, it was a pleasure spending the week with you. As Bazam mentioned, I enjoyed debriefing presentations and meeting with you both. Especially because we are pursuing different degrees of architecture, we tend to focus on varying aspect of a same subject, often resulting in a more thorough analysis.

Candid Mentors
To have three people showing you how their firm works, results in efficiency. Something comes up, no problem, we can work with it. Due to a thoughtfully crafted schedule, the pauses allowed for an optimal flow which resulted in a positive learning outcome. Checking everything is running well for all, making sure we externs, are happy with the program or if there’s anything in particular we would want to see. Candid also, in answering our questions about the firm or anything related to the field.
As a mentee, we could approach Ana, Ryan or Sergio with questions. Whether about: AI in the field, CA phases or healthcare specificities. If they didn’t have the answer, then there was certainly someone at the Boston studio who knew.
Not everyone can be a mentor, not everyone has to be. When the right people are present, it makes for an enjoyable and seamless learning opportunity.
A Sensitive Client
In some instances, the users of the space drive a project.
Carter school is unique. The site, located near Massachusetts Avenue orange line T stop in Boston has no space for landscaping. The roof is where the green space is installed, giving students and educators access to outdoor activities. Perkins&Will’s aim was to provide the amenities needed for students with developmental and medical challenges.
For Carter School, a common desire to see the project come to fruition is what kept the best relations between the owners, the contractor and the architects.
A model to replicate, allowing access to education and development when it was previously difficult or not possible.

It looks like a place to Create.
During Monday’s meeting, JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) team opened with updates company and Boston studio wide.
It seems this calendar year will be filled with event pertaining to JEDI. Lunch & Learn country version session, with catering provided by local businesses or team members from the country.
The office had a close to parity gender team, there are no majority to speak of, only diverse talented people.
Workplace Mindful
Having remodeled their space in 2023, Perkins & Will was able to showcase their Interior design team’s skills. In their new design they took advantage of the changes the pandemic brought to office spaces and culture.
They have parted their space in half, the front of house and back of house (yes, food and beverage will never really leave me), with connecting spaces along the path.
Natural light and views are features the Interiors team were intent on highlighting.
The work culture has extended to projects, mindfulness and acknowledgment of the land’s origins.
Hello,
I am Cordélia Vergé, finishing the Bachelor of Architecture program at the BAC this spring. I come from France, my interests include traveling, world architecture and photography amongst others.
I am thrilled to be an extern at Perkins & Will Boston for the week; understanding how projects come to fruition and the dynamics between departments.
I aspire to be helpful to any team I work with as well as learn from the people around me.
Looking forward to the week with fellow Perkins & Will ConnEx buddies.
