Alex Chilton - Bach’s Bottom (1981)

The second solo album by former Box Tops and Big Star frontman Alex Chilton has never been released in the US on vinyl. For any Chilton fan, tracking down a copy can cost a pretty penny. Hopefully a release can incorporate the five additional tracks included on the 1993 Razor & Tie release, which added the excellent song Bangkok, as well as some 7″ and other rarities from the era to expand to a double LP reissue.

Jon Tiven: I met Tommy [Hoehn] when I went down to do the Bach’s Bottom record. I needed some young, un-jaded musicians to play on Alex’s sessions, because Alex was surrounding himself with people who were full of negative energy at that point. And I really didn’t want that on my sessions; I wanted people who were enthused at the prospect of recording, not people who were already sort of burned out and who looked upon it as an excuse to raise hell and document that kind of behavior. [They wanted to] make a recording that nobody would ever hear, which was basically what Alex was up to at that point.

Alex Chilton - All Of The Time (1975?)

You know kids, once upon a time finding music was not quite so simple. You really had to search. I’d gotten a hold of Big Star’s Sister Lovers, but it was difficult to find anything else. I mean anything. As I mentioned in an earlier post, someone had given me Like Flies on Sherberton cassette, and I wasn’t sure what to make of it. Then, to confuse me even more, I found Bach’s Bottom (title a play on Box Tops). It was less an album than a collection with some demos, studio jams, etc. There were several songs which were unlistenable (Summertime Blues/I’m So Tired/Oh Baby I’m Free), but as with Flies, there were several really good songs. This particular one wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Radio City.
