— an interlude
Battles of the Brothers
The Company of Thorin Oakenshield was made up of brothers.
Entirely too many brothers.
Brothers everywhere: being underfoot, being overprotective, telling embarrassing stories around the campfire, arguing over portions, tucking in at night, stealing blankets, double-checking packs, squabbling over watch duties, helping each other on ponies, shoving each other off ponies, sharing dried meats, nicking dried meats. Family dynamics and lifetimes of deep, abiding affection (and annoyance, oh, so much annoyance, and knowing every single button) combined into a sure recipe for disaster. Crack. Delicious, wonderfully written crack. The Company parts into two Groups, the youngers and the olders, and a delicious prank war starts. And Bilbo? Bilbo is right between them, annoyed and slightly disturbed. Why? Because honestly, These dwarves? They are quiet bad at it. So what should the normal noble Hobbit do in such a situation? Fight or flight? (Spoiler, he fights. And it’s wonderful. if you ever Need to be cheered up after reading Angst, this is it.)
