Just in case if my computer dies and its memory is erased or something, should I make hard copies of my wips so I don't lose them? Hope you had a great day!! :)

Disclaimer: this is purely my personal view of it, and please remember I am pretty much brand new to writing seriously. This is my first major wip, mate! So definitely make your own judgement on it, and I’d certainly love for other writers to weigh in if you have your own opinions on this!

Okay, now that that’s out of the way~

I don’t have any hard copies of my wip. I have multiple reasons for this: I’m an eco-nerd who wants to save paper, I lose paper things wayyyy too easily, I’m not even done the first draft of my wip yet, and printer toner is HECKIN’ EXPENSIVE HOLY STARS. Also my printer sucks and it would overheat before it would print 30 pages so. And if I did lose everything, wouldn’t it take forever to retype it all from a hard copy? Even with a scanning text-reader program-thing?

What I currently have for back-ups: the main file is on Google Docs, which is on the cloud (and therefore I can access it from any device with internet). After every chapter or so I make a copy in Word and save it to my hard drive and a USB key. I’m sure other people have a lot more, but as of now, ‘tis what I do. In that case, if my computer memory gets erased, I still have my USB and the cloud version to fall back on~

Now! If you prefer traditionally writing, I’m not sure! And of course, if you just want a physical copy of your wip to hold in your hands, I can completely understand wanting to print it off. ^^

How to Back-Up only your Original Tumblr Posts

I’ve seen a few different guides to backing up your entire Tumblr content, but what I wanted was a way to get JUST my own original posts.  My bullshit, rambling, personal posts, asks, and content.  I don’t need a million gifs of shows on my harddrive.  

So I found a way, I’ve used it, and it works.  Go to this page and follow the instructions.    Download the app, unzip it, open the .exe and give it your blog URL(s).  It will scan your blog and tell you how many total posts it finds.  (3622 for me.)  

Then you can go into the settings (make sure you’ve selected the right blog) and choose exactly what you want to download.  You can get all images, no images, no gifs, no asks, only certain tags...  Well, what I did was leave everything alone, but unchecked “Download Reblogged Posts.”  (Sorry for lack of pics, my screenshots don’t want to work.)

Then select the blog you want and hit “Add to Queue” and then “Crawl.”  It will start going through your blog and downloading everything to your harddrive.  The formatting is in html for textposts, so it’s easy to copy and repost elsewhere but not great for reading on its own.  But it works.  Out of my main blog it saved 614 posts.  PERFECT.  Just what I wanted.   When I decide what I want to DO with that stuff it’ll be there.    Share to save a life.

A Little Help, Please?

I’ve been trying to back up my tumblr - regardless of whether this site goes female-presenting nipples up or not, backups are just a good idea - and am having problems with it. Tumblr has a back-up function, in Settings, way at the bottom. It’s been running since yesterday afternoon. So far I’m having a problem with third-party apps, because my internet-enabled machine is running XP and doesn’t have the hardware to upgrade further than that. (A new one’s On the List of Things to Get. You know how that goes.)

The utility provided here says you can back up blogs that don’t belong to you. No password needed, you just need the blog name. So if someone would like to back up my blog and send me a copy of the zip - that would be lovely.

I don’t actually know whether this or any method of archiving tumblr will preserve the captions that appear under the pictures when you click them, and without those there’s not much point to the blog at all, since that’s where most of the dialog is. And as of today I’ve made over 23,000 posts, mostly reblogs, so it’s likely to be a sizeable time and resource commitment, backing it up. And I have no obvious way to reward anyone who does it; though if you do this and tell me what reward you’d like I’ll try to do it.

If nobody bites, it won’t surprise or disappoint me. But everybody’s so nice on here, it won’t surprise me if I get multiple takers, either. So I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
