HEART  COMES  TO  A  HALT,  words  slowing  as  hers  pierce  through  his  ramblings.  It’s  unexpected,  unusual,  and  yet … not  unwarranted.  This  bond  between  them  has  been  growing  with  each  passing  day,  with  each  stupid  little  joke  shared  between  them,  with  each  awful  song  they  decide  to  sing  along  to  in  the  truck.  He  has  wanted  this  for  a  good  long  while  now  but  has  never  allowed  himself  to  admit  that.  Not  to  himself,  not  to  his  sisters  who  tease  him  about  it,  and certainly  not  to  Jess.  Never  to  Jess.  They  are  both  too  fragile,  both  tired  and  lost  and  afraid.  What  if  he  hurts  her?  No,  he  knows  he’d  never  do  that.  But … what  if  she  hurts  him?
