Snow is the big theme of 2023 so far . . . as far as the PCT goes. The implications, as we have noted, are far-reaching.
Long-time PCT hiker Weathercarrot sent some photos from the foothills of the Sierra . . . taken just a few days ago. According to Weathercarrot, "this area had been experiencing unprecedented prolonged snow depth for such a low elevation. And then the warm rains came on top of all that snow creating some interesting and equally unprecedented impacts." The road washed out and run-off is surging.
The cascading impact of the abundance of snow and subsequent melt will include deterioration of access roads, overwhelming numbers of downed trees, and difficulty getting to the backcountry to clear and maintain trails.
