After spending the last couple of weeks gazing at the peak of Mount Olympus from a beach across the sea, it was time to go in for a closer look. It was a day of personal achievements; my highest hike, my toughest hike, and also my first hike ever in the snow.

I left Ben for the day to tackle Mount Olympus with a the four travellers we'd met and camped with the past few days, who were all experienced hikers and climbers and admittedly left me behind in the dust. 

We started with coffee and breakfast by a refuge at 1100m; that was the easiest bit of the hike. The rest was a tiny 4,6km hike but which climbed over 1000m in altitude along the way. We hiked up past the frost level, at around 1800m, and soon I was slipping and sliding around in the snow in my Vans, being helpfully pulled up by other members of the group wearing their sensible hiking boots and clinging onto my stick for dear life. We spotted an ibex grazing casually above us at one point, totally unphased by us.

We reached the Zolotas refuge at 2100m after 3 hours. It was closed, but its balcony offered an impressive view over the mountains and the sloping valley, beyond which could be seen a glimpse of the city and the coastline below, jutting out beneath an immense blue sky which made me feel as though I'd reached the edge of the world. Here the group split up, half of us to continue up to the ridge, and the other half to begin hiking back down (guess which one I was in). We went and drank hot chocolates and frappes in the restaurant while the others scrambled through knee-deep vertical snow. I think we made the right choice.

We began the challenging hike from the edge of the lake, an unmarked drop-off point and one of hundreds along the shores of Lake Koman, where some people will have to walk for hours to return to their houses, hidden far away in the mountains.
