Back to the Start (Full)
I started this in bits and pieces, so some of this was posted previously.Â
But I finished!Â
Baconverse: Back to the Start Takes place five months after the end of season 2.
ââŚCanâŚhearâŚ?"Â
M'gannâs eyes snap open and she sits up in her bedroom on the Watchtower.Â
Itâs been nearly five months since the Reach were defeatedâŚsince the Light were fragmentedâŚSince Wally WestâŚ
But she can hear him now. Why now suddenly?
She gets to her feet and wanders around the room.
"WâŚWallyâŚ?â
âM'gâŚhear me?"Â
She reaches out psychically. "I can hear youâŚfocus on me. Focus on my voice, Wally."Â
"M'gannâŚ?â
âWhere are you?"Â
"IâŚI donât knowâŚso tiredâŚalways runningâŚsoâŚso scaredâŚ"Â
"WallyâŚâ
âM'gannâŚpleaseâŚplease end thisâŚpleaseâŚâ
He sounds broken. He sounds like he wants to die, and M'gann feels tears threaten her because when she reaches out with her mind she can feel his defeat; his longing to really truly end it.
âHang on, Wally. Just hang on a little longer."Â
If she concentrates she can feel his presence; can pinpoint where heâs been for the last five months. She shifts into her uniform and heads out of her room and for the bioship.Â
"Just a little longer, Wally. Iâm on my way.â
*****
M'gann dashes off the Bioship and is immediately hit by the cold arctic winds outside.
This is it.
This is where they lost him.
âWally?â
She gets no response, but she can feel his presence. Heâs here, but she canât see him; like heâs on a completely different plain of existence.
She reaches out forcefully, trying to latch her mind onto his, and heâs moving so fast that itâs almost impossible, but she tries harder anyways.
âWally. I know youâre there, and I know you can hear me. I need you to focus on me. On my mind.â
âCanâtstopohgodcanâtstophelpmecanâtstoppleasejustcanâtstopcanâtstopcanâtstopcanât-â
âWALLY!â
âArtemisâŚIâm sorryâŚâ
His voice sounds so small, but itâs slowed down enough that she can finally connect with his mind.
White light flashes before her eyes and when it clears, sheâs in a warm clearing. The sun shines brightly overhead, and the grass is green. The trees are in full bloom and off in the distance thereâs a clear stream.Â
âWhere-?â
A blur of yellow and red whizzes by her and she stumbles back.Â
âWally?â
It happens again and she reaches out to grab on, but misses.Â
âWally!â
It happens a few more times, and by the fifth time, sheâs timed it just so, and jumps right in front of him.Â
They collide, and with a grunt, he tumbles to the ground with Mâgann, tangled up in the grass.
She pulls away from him and rolls him onto his back. âWally. Wally, can you hear me?âÂ
He blinks up at her, eyes obviously unfocused. âMâgannâŚ?â
âYes. Yes, itâs me. Weâre inside your mind,â she tells him. âAlthough where your headâs at I have no ideaâŚâÂ
âBlue Valley,â he mutters. âWeâre in Blue ValleyâŚâ
Mâgann frowns as she looks around them. âYour hometown, before Central City?âÂ
He nods, obviously still dazed. âIâm still runningâŚcanât stop runningâŚâ
âWally,â Mâgann says, cupping his face in her hands. âListen to me. I think I can stop you, but I need your help, because itâs going to be like throwing the emergency brake in the middle of a high speed chase. So I need you to focus all of your energy on stopping.â
âCanâtâŚâ he looks exhausted. âI canât, Mâgann, I canât stop.â
âYou can,â she snaps. âYouâre stuck in some kind of speed loop, but you can stop this. We can stop this. Take a deep breath, and stop.âÂ
*****
She comes back to herself with a jolt and a rift opens up in front of her accompanied by a crack of lightning.Â
Wally West falls out of the rift and into the snow, unconscious and a mess. Heâs pale, and intensely thin; his hair overgrown and messy, his Kid Flash uniform in tatters. His whole body is vibrating and sheâs not sure if itâs from the running or if heâs shivering from the cold, but she doesnât care because heâs here and heâs back.
Mâgann lets out a relieved sob and turns on her comm link. âMiss Martian to Watchtower. Have I got a surprise for you.âÂ
*****Â
When he wakes up, heâs staring at a painted white ceiling. Itâs sunny, and he can feel a cool breeze drifting in through the open window.
Everything feels slow, and heâs so relieved he could burst into tears.
He covers his eyes with an arm and breathes deeply, trying to contain himself.Â
Heâs not even sure where he is, but he feels like thatâs okay. As long as he can sit still, heâs gonna be fine.
âAre you awake?â
Wally blinks and looks up, finding Mâgann staring at him from the doorway. He opens his mouth to talk, but no words come out.
She grins. âYouâve lost your voice, Wally. All that runningâŚyou must have been screaming for a while.âÂ
âWhere am I?â
âMy apartmentâŚWe initially had you at the Watchtower, but Dick and I felt you might recover better someplace else.â
Wally frowns and slowly sits up. âWhatâŚwhat happened at the Watchtower?â
Mâgann sighs, her grin fading. âThe League didnât believe that it was you. Batman wanted to do some tests on you and Dick and I were afraid that your mind was too fragile to withstand too much more sedationâŚwe smuggled you out and brought you here.â
His eyes widen. âAnd what makes you think the League wonât come after me.â
Mâgann sighs and sits next to him. âThey will. Itâs an inevitability. We need a plant.â
Wally stares at her, and then nods. He swallows, and then tries to speak. âArtemis?â he croaks out softly.
Mâgann gives him a sympathetic look. âSheâs on an away mission to Atlantis with Kaldur and Conner. We tried to reach them, but so far we havenât had any luck.â
He nods and looks down, and she grins.
âGet a little more rest,â she tells him. âIâve got some soup on the stove.âÂ
At the mention of food, Wallyâs stomach rumbles loudly and he gives her an incredibly sheepish look.
She laughs and ruffles his hair.
*****Â
Kaldur nods as he grips the comm tightly.Â
âI understand, M'gann. Weâll be back on the surface as soon as possible."Â
Artemis looks up, then, frowning as he disconnects. "Whatâs going on? Did something happen at the Watchtower? Is everyone okay?"Â
Kaldur opens his mouth, and then closes it.Â
Conner narrows his eyes. "What happened?"Â
Kaldur looks at him and then back at Artemis. "Conner, I need to speak to Artemis alone."Â
Conner looks from one to the other, and slight realization dawns on him. He nods and steps out, and when heâs gone, Artemis turns to Kaldur.
"He didnât have to leave. Whateverâs going on, heâll find out eventually."Â
"Artemis."Â
"So? Who was it? Sportsmaster again?â she asks. âDear old dad causing more problems? Wants my head on a stick or something?"Â
He huffs out a breath. "Artemis."Â
"We should get-"Â
âArtemis.â
She stops talking then, staring at him, all business. Sheâs always all business these days. Sheâs thrown herself into work so hard sinceâŚ
Heâs having a hard time putting this into words. Usually he can break any news to anyone. Heâs so used to making the hard choices, telling his team the things that they need to hear, even the things that break their heart into pieces.Â
Heâs not terribly certain how to give good news.
He looks at her desperately, hoping that maybe, by some feat, sheâll understand.Â
"Well?â Artemis asks. Her voice is so even, so void of emotion. âWhat is it?"Â
Kaldur swallows. "Itâs Wally."Â
Her expression doesnât change. She just stares at him, saying nothing.
"M'gann found Wally,â he tells her. âThey are at her apartment, and Iâm taking you there as soon as we wrap up."Â
Still, she says nothing.Â
"Artemis-â
âItâs not him,â she says. âItâs never him. You know that. That shapeshifter we ran across, he tried to make me believe, and I was stupid and I did, and it wonât happen agai-"Â
"It is him, Artemis,â Kaldur says. âM'gann is sure of it."Â
"Then M'gannâs being a moron, and we should go save her from her damn food hope,â Artemis tells him.
He watches her walk out; hears her say something to Conner about saving his damn fool ex, and his rubs his face.
âThis will not go well.â Â
*****Â
Artemis stares at the door to MâGannâs apartment. Sheâs been standing there staring at it for a number of minutes.
According to KaldurâŚto MâGannâŚto DickâŚWally West is behind this door.
She should knock.
She should knock.
Heâs there. Heâs behind this door. Heâs alive and breathing and sheâs missed him so much that it physically hurts, and she should just knock on the damn door.
She doesnât.
Instead, she turns and walks away.
*****Â
When she gets to the bottom of the stairs and heads for the front door, she nearly rams right into Dick.
âWhoa. Hey.â He takes her shoulders, smiling. He looks exhausted and happy and upset all at the same time. âDid you see him?âÂ
Artemis hesitates. âIâŚâÂ
His smile falls. âAw. ArtemisâŚâÂ
âWhat if itâs not him?â she blurts out. âWhat if...what if whatever Mâgann found is just...itâs not Wally? What if-âÂ
âIt is,â Dick says gently. âItâs him. Putting aside all of the DNA tests done on him when we took him to the Watchtower...I know Wally West. For a few years, we were practically the same person. He is my best friend. I know him better than I know myself some days, and I know that itâs him. When you see him, youâll know it, too.âÂ
She swallows. âWhat if...what if it is him? What if it is him and we donât work anymore? What if Iâm too different? What if heâs...five months...just...just running, what if heâs not...what if heâs not Wally anymore?âÂ
âThereâs only one way to find out,â Dick tells her. He takes her hand and squeezes it. âCome on. Come back up. Come see Wally.âÂ
*****Â
âIâm not saying this is the best soup ever because my grandmother would like...rise from the dead and give me that look that says Iâve been a bad boy and Iâm in a lot of trouble, but...Mâgann...this is...this soup is so good.â
Mâgann canât help a soft laugh. âWally, itâs canned soup. I heated it up on the stove.âÂ
âOh...Still! Itâs really good!âÂ
Heâs sitting up on the couch, wearing a worn, soft t-shirt and boxer shorts Dick had grabbed from the Watchtower before theyâd smuggled him out. They hang a little loose now, five months later, and Mâgann frets over it silently as she ladles him out more soup.
Sheâs in the process of handing him the bowl when the door opens and Dick steps in, Artemis behind him, and Mâgann freezes.Â
âYouâre here,â she lights up. âHi.âÂ
Wally looks over, sees Artemis and stands quickly.Â
âWally, wait-!â Dick cries.Â
Itâs fast, the way heâs on his feet and then on the floor, his legs not quite strong enough to hold his weight yet.Â
âWally!?â Artemis cries, dashing over out of instinct. She pushes Mâgann out of the way and kneels down next to him, cupping his face. âWhat happened?âÂ
He opens his mouth and no sound comes out for a moment as he struggles.Â
âBaâŚâÂ
She knows heâs trying to say âBabe.âÂ
âHis vocal chords are still raw,â Mâgann explains. âHe still canât really talk.âÂ
Artemis frowns. âWhy wouldâŚ?âÂ
âHe was screaming while he was running,â Dick tells her gently.Â
Artemis stares at them and then back at Wally, who looks sheepish.Â
âOpening up a psychic link,â Mâgann says.Â
âHi, Babe.âÂ
âIs it really you?âÂ
âAs far as I know. Thatâs what they tell me.âÂ
Artemis swallows and looks up, realizing Dick and Mâgann have cleared out of the living room, before looking back at Wally. âGod, Wally, what happened?âÂ
âI...I still trying to figure that out,â he tells her, his expression going grim. âI have a lot to sort through. But...but itâs...itâs been a little hard to think...itâs getting better but...but...I was...I was running for five months. Wherever I was. I was just...running and I couldnât stop. I should be dead.âÂ
Artemis grips his shoulders. âI canât believe youâre here.âÂ
Tears spring to his eyes as he fumbles to hold onto her. âMe neither. Youâre all I could think about, Babe.â
She wraps him in her arms, holding him tightly and squeezing her eyes shut. Everything about him feels the same, from the feel of his hair against her cheek to the tenseness of his shoulders and how it melts away in her arms. He even smells the same.Â
She loves and hates that Dick is right.Â
There isnât any way this isnât Wally West.
Artemis holds him tighter, and allows herself a couple of tears as he sobs quietly against her neck.Â
*****Â
Itâs an hour later, and Artemis has a cup of coffee cradled in her hands at Mâgannâs kitchen table. Dick, Kaldur, and Mâgann surround her. Wally sleeps deeply on the couch in the other room, still exhausted.Â
âSo...you smuggled him out of the Watchtower, without the Leagueâs permission,â Artemis says softly.Â
âThe tests they were talking about doing would have required heavy sedation,â Mâgann explains. âHeâs fragile right now. I was worried he wouldnât have woken up if theyâd put him under that deep. Heâs starting to heal, his powers are helping it along, but his mind was...fragmented.âÂ
Artemis looks up at Mâgann worriedly. âDo you think he could...do you think he could disappear again?âÂ
âWe donât know,â Dick says. âSo far, heâs stable, and Mâgannâs been monitoring his progress, but...we just donât know.âÂ
âWhat we do know is that the League will not stay away for long,â Kaldur cuts in. âWeâre going to have to face them sooner or later.âÂ
âSooner,â Mâgann tells them.Â
Thereâs a bang on the door before itâs kicked open, and the Flash runs in, followed by Batman, and Green Arrow.Â
In the living room, Wally shoots up with a gasp ou of a dead sleep and runs, faster than anyone has ever seen him run - possibly faster than anyone else has ever run before - to a corner of the room, a trace of lightning following him. His legs wobble and give.Â
Artemis gets there as quick as she can, just keeping him from hitting the floor.Â
âMâgann, open up a channel,â he tells her,Â
She does.Â
âWHAT THE HELL, BARRY!â
The Leaguers all jump from Wallyâs booming voice in their heads. Even Batman hadnât seen that coming.Â
âWhat do you mean What the hell?!â Barry yells, without missing a beat. âMiss Martian and Nightwing kidnapped you from the Watchtower!âÂ
âOhmygod KIDNAPPED?! What is WRONG with you! They brought me here to recover!âÂ
âYouwererecoveringjustfine!âÂ
âIWASNâTANDYOUKNOWITDONâTEVENTRYITWITHME!âÂ
âYOUWEREDEAD!âÂ
âIWASNâTDEADANDITâSNOTMYFAULTYOUTHOUGHTIWAS!âÂ
Their words have gotten so fast that no one else can understand them, just that Wally is yelling, and quickly.Â
âWait!â Barry cries, holding up a hand. âWait!âÂ
Wally stares at him, eyes wide and blazing with anger, his body shaking against Artemis.Â
âWhen did you learn to talk that fast?âÂ
âWho cares?â Wally snaps telepathically. âBarry you canât just kick Mâgannâs door down like that! Not cool!âÂ
âCome back to the Watchtower,â Barry orders.Â
âNo.âÂ
âThen at least come back to Central City, your parents are worried sick.âÂ
âI canât,â Wally tells him, looking torn. âI...I canât even talk, Barry. I can barely run. I need time. I need...I need sleep and I need...I need my team.âÂ
Ollie rests a hand on Barryâs shoulder. âWeâll check in with you kids tomorrow. If you need us, donât hesitate to call.âÂ
Bruce narrows his eyes at Dick. âYou and I will talk later.âÂ
Dick swallows, but nods.Â
âNice to know that we still get treated like babies,â Wally grumbles once the trio of Leaguers are gone.Â
âBack on the couch, you,â Mâgann orders. âMore soup. More sleep.âÂ
Wally sags against Artemis, unable to hold himself up anymore and nods.Â
*****Â
They all wind up sleeping in the living room.Â
Mâgann is curled up in a chair, watching her friends as they sleep. Wally and Artemis somehow sharing the couch, his leg thrown over her and her face smushed in against his chest. Dick and Kaldur sharing an air mattress on the floor.Â
Dick has always been a messy sleeper. Feet everywhere. Arms out. By comparison, Kaldur is curled up tight on himself, on his side, away from Dick, looking peaceful. Â
She closes her eyes, and feels gratefulness spread over her, warmer than any blanket, even though the one person who should be here isnât.Â
Until he is.Â
Thereâs a soft tap on the broken door, and Mâgann gets up, knowing that Conner will be on the other side.Â
She shifts it open carefully and smiles sadly.Â
âHi,â she whispers.Â
âHi,â he says. âI...I heard...about Wally.âÂ
Mâgann nods. âHeâs asleep. Everyone is.âÂ
âOh. I can...Iâll come back.âÂ
âOr you could stay,â Mâgann says quickly.Â
âMâgannâŚâÂ
âI know. I know. But this isnât about us,â she explains. âThis is about Wally, and he needs us right now. All of us. So just...stay?âÂ
Conner stares at her for a moment before relenting and stepping inside.Â
Soon, Mâgann is back in her chair. Kaldur and Dick still share the air matress. Wally and Artemis are still on the couch.
And now Conner is settled on the side of her chair, his weight resting against it.Â
She reaches down and offers him her hand.Â
It takes a moment, but he takes it. Warm fingers holding hers.Â
And itâs a start.Â
