Back to rant again because WTAF, Lucasfilm???
The saddest part of this quote is that HE'S RIGHT. As the comic series has made abundantly clear, Ben Solo NEVER had a choice in his entire life. He was ALWAYS defined by the mistakes of his family, always targeted for his parentage, always always ALWAYS a victim. He never got to choose until the end of TROS and by then he valued himself so little that he thought the only good he could do was die. He chose death. I mean yes, he saved Rey, but the novel makes clear that he believed the galaxy was better off with her than with him. He chose death because he thought it was all he was good for, because HIS ABUSERS (including Luke who wanted to use him as a pet perfect Jedi) MADE HIM THINK THAT. Because he NEVER HAD A CHOICE. He didn't get to choose to be a Skywalker, or to NOT be one.
But then REY, who it turns out was born to both Dark and Light just like Ben was and yet was never groomed and abused and manipulated for her power the way Ben was, SHE gets to choose. SHE GETS TO CHOOSE not to be a Palpatine (even though the father who gave her that name was a good man). SHE gets to choose to be a Skywalker (but only takes the Light side of the family legacy, not that pesky Dark). SHE gets to be saved by her good parents who died to protect her, SHE gets to be saved by Ben Solo who also died for her. By CHOOSING not to be a Palpatine and choosing to be a Skywalker, she manages to erase ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DIED FOR HER with that single choice. Parents? Nope, disavowed. Soulmate? Nah, replaced as the child his parents always wanted. TROS-Rey is a monster. And Ben is the ultimate tragic victim.
I am so horrified and grossed out. I cannot believe this is what Star Wars has become. This is the ending we were sold as "happy." I will never consider the ST canon, ever. The best I can do is considering TLJ a high-production-value work of fanfiction. But I f*cking reject EVERYTHING about TROS.
“Can a Catholic Feel the Bern?”
«Now the inevitable response to even feeling the Tepid, much less the Bern, is that a Catholic can’t vote for Bernie Sanders, and for two main reasons — he is a (1) Socialist and he is (2) pro-abortion. Now it may be Very Stupid to vote for Bernie Sanders. It might even be Very Wrong for you or I vote for him. But it is decidedly not outside of the realms of possibility that a Catholic may, in good conscience, vote for Bernie Sanders.
The socialist thing is almost a non-issue, involving a death-spiral of whatever the hell you think you mean when you say “socialism,” so let’s recommend Mr. Antoniello’s analysis of the issue (which includes the tantalizing quote from Joseph Ratzinger, that “democratic socialism was and is close to Catholic social doctrine”) and skip merrily to the big abortion question.
What follows is not a clever argument. I’m sure it has already been done. It took, I dunno, 20 minutes to cook. It is a series of pedantic quotes from boring bishops who represent our basic source of authority on the issue. (If you’re one of those folks who hear these kinds of arguments and get all “well screw the American Bishops, Pope [Insert Favorite Pope Here] said [insert out-of-context remark here]” then you can just…I dunno….just skip to the combox and do your thing. (If you’re not a Catholic (I understand this is still considered a viable life-possibility) and you feel the need to say things like, “wow, what sheeple slaves 2 the ecclesiastical hiearchy, amiright,” well, you can just comment with an “X” and we’ll fill it out with dexterous and imaginative Catholics-don’t-think-for-themselves lines, because we’ve heard them, found them silly, and want to save you the time. (And because you know what? We’re frickin’ charitable. It’s what we do. It’s who we are.)))
So anyways…»

HAPPY HANUKKAH
This photo of my friends grandchildren exemplifies my Holiday Season experience growing up. Grab a gift. Check the tag, Rip it open. Identify. Throw it aside. Yell thank you randomly. Grab another gift. Repeat. At the end count your presents, count your sister’s presents. Pout if they had more, gloat if you did. Wait for your grandparents to arrive with a whole station wagon full of presents. Then finally, grow bored and start really looking at the cool stuff you got.
Sure, we were religious and had to do that church thing, but so did everyone else, it was the price you paid for the cool parts of the Holiday, and the carols were fun. I didn’t grow up in an area with a lot of cultural diversity. Actually there was some, but I mostly never saw it as I just assumed that everyone’s family life was exactly like ours. I remember dropping something off at the house of a classmate and THEY DIDN'T HAVE A CHRISTMAS TREE! Their house just looked well “normal” no decorations at all.
I was completely blown away.*
I asked my mom why and she explained they were Jewish and celebrated Hanukkah the way a dyed in the wool Catholic would - It’s the “Festival of Lights.” What the hell is that? She might as well have said “Oh, it’s beige and purple.” She didn’t know. Do they get presents? Yes, each day, for 8 days.
That did not sound fun.
I have to admit that some 40+ years later I’m none the wiser. I know that Hanukkah has to do with the oil in the lamp lasting for 8 days, but I am far more familiar with the other Jewish holidays given that I worked with several Jewish clients through an ad agency client. And I don’t mean Mr. Bernstein who happens to be Jewish, but more like Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles, temples, cemeteries and the like.
I like the Jewish holidays I’ve been fortunate to attend, they're not all that different from Catholic holidays. A lot of people, a lot of food and drink, a celebratory spirit and a little of the boring religious part based on the Old Testament. :)
The biggest Christmas celebrators I know these days are my Jewish friends.
You know what’s a good idea, actually reading my bible, instead of telling myself every night “oh yeah I’ll do it tomorrow”
Last week, we worked on calendar planning for next year. Has anyone else realized the potentially hilarious memes to come from Easter falling on April Fools Day next year?
