Found an old flashdrive from middle school and am laughing at my old attempts at editing but I've also compiled my favorites because 14 year old me was onto something - with varying levels of success lol
The Squad now has a personal healthcare companion. This entry'll be about Baymax from the movie Big Hero 6. He was a robot created by Tadashi Hamada to help sick and injured people. After Tadashi's death, his brother Hiro reprogrammed him with fighting skills and eventually gave him a supersuit to search for his killer. Though the healthcare programming remains a core part of Baymax's system. He'll fight but he won't kill or violate his healthcare protocols in any way. He's part of a superhero team formed by Hiro called Big Hero 6. Fun Fact: Big Hero 6 was originally a Marvel superhero team. Though eventually Disney adapted it and overtook the original comic in popularity. Folks associate it more with Disney than Marvel these days. That's why he's not in the Marvel series rarity. Technically, Baymax is a Marvel character and the movie does take place on Earth-14123 in the Marvel multiverse. Baymax , known in-game as Hero Baymax, first appeared in Fortnite for the Chapter 6 Season 1 Battlepass.
He does fit in with the tone of the game. He is a cartoon character and the game has a very cartoonish artstyle. Cliff Bleszinski, a former designer at Epic, when talking about the save the world mode, said the game's artstyle looked like "Anna and Elsa running around killing zombies". This is important because Frozen has the same art-style as Big Hero 6. Baymax also somewhat thematically fits into the Japanese-inspired motif throught the season, though he doesn't fit into the Demon Hunter theme that well. The samurai outfit does look cool though. However, he doesn't fit into the game overall mostly because of who he is as a character. Baymax is a healthcare companion. He was programmed to help people. That wouldn't go away just cause he's in the loop. He wouldn't kill anybody. He'd defend himself if he was threatened but he wouldn't kill. He wouldn't even use a gun or any other weapon. He has a seperate chip from his healthcare one that can do Karate, but not to use weapons. He probably doesn't know how. If he knew how, he probably wouldn't even use them cause there's no way that they could be used for healthcare, his primary programming. His personality is completely gone, the main trace of it is an emote.
This fist bump was taken right from the movie. Hiro fist bumps him and when he makes an explosion sound, he interprets that as "Ba-la-la-la". That was actually added to the healthcare matrix. It's also very thematic, as him learning to fist bump from Hiro for Healthcare, is also juxtaposed with the Rocket fist that he was given for combat.
It's one of his most iconic attacks. Yet it ain't even in the game, not even as a Mythic! They did try to fill the void with some other items though.
The Glider and contrails are both accurate to Baymax's abilities, but that's where it ends for him. The hammer is actually made of Microbots, one of Hiro's inventions. It's controlled by a device that transmits brain waves. It's a cool reference to the movie, and it even has a cool effect where it breaks and rebuilds as you swing it, but it looks kind of lame compared to the other items. Microbots can build anything conceivable by the human mind, and somebody chooses a hammer. It's kind of lame overall. The robot backbling is another one of Hiro's inventions that led to the microbot. It's a cool reference but it's not really something Baymax would have on his back. This also brings to light something else missing from the inclusion of Baymax in this game or more accurately, someone else.
Hiro and Baymax's bond is the lifeblood of Big Hero 6. It's kind of strange that these items are the only sign of him. I get that you don't want to have a 14 year old playable in a game where you can shoot and kill people, but you can't really have one without the other. It's strange that these items are the only references/mentions we get of him.
Final Thoughts on Baymax in Fortnite
He fits in well with the tone of the game, but his inclusion completely ignores his character in the movie, the tv show, or anything else. I feel like the only reason he was included was cause Disney wanted a Japanese looking character to go into their Japanese themed season. They knew about the massive promo Godzilla was getting in this season and they wanted in on it. Since they bought part of Epic, they've been plugging their stuff in the game. It's possibly to test out whatever Metaverse they're doing. It had the look of Baymax, but not the soul of who he is. As for alternative games, Big Hero 6 has a decent amount of games, but very few good ones. There are a few games that I feel are more accurate to who he is that are also decent games.
Baymax enters the Toybox
Disney Infinity was a series of toys-to-life games. If you've too young to know what that is, toys-to-life was a trend in gaming for a while where you put actual figures with chips on a base and whoever's on that figure appears in the game. The three most notable series that went on in toys to life were Skylanders, Lego Dimensions, and Disney Infinity. The reason the genre died out was cause they were all going on at once and it was so expensive to get them. They all had different gameplay styles though; Skylanders had a full on campaign, Dimensions was like your typical Lego game, and Disney Infinity was a sandbox. It was also a crossover game with several Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters. There were two main modes, the Playsets which you got by putting certain pieces on the top part of the base. They had dedicated stories and were only limited to certain characters, usually at least from the same franchise. I.E. Avengers Characters in Avengers plus Rocket and Nova, Star Wars Characters in the Star Wars sets, Inside Out Characters in the Inside Out set, Etcetera. The other mode, the big selling point, was the Toy Box. It was a mode where any character was available, you could create whatever you wanted in terms of buildings or even make your own games. You could do that with Creativi-Toys, you could essentially program in-game without having to type any code. You could share them online back in it's heyday and have other people play them. You can't do that any more though, they're shut down. The other main thing was power discs. They were discs that would either summon vehicles, change terrains, or add weapons that were sold seperately from the main game. There were certain characters that could only be played in the Toy Box or Toy Box expansion games. That was the case for most of the Disney originals, including Baymax. He and Hiro were released for 2.0, the second game in the series, on November 4, 2014.
His design and moveset is very faithful here. When Baymax picks Hiro up, instead of the normal pick up animation, he puts him on his back and can fly with him like in the movie. His regular attacks include the Karate moves that he's programmed with. His special attack and his ranged both include the flying fist and he can fly anytime he wants. Though he can do some things in the Toybox that would be out of character for the movie like use a blaster or a lightsaber, it doesn't really matter. The main reason for this is the setting and how the characters the work. The name "Toybox", the fact that they break apart when you die, the fact that it's toys-to-life, and the fact that they talk to the player everytime they spawn implies that they're just toys. As opposed to Fortnite, in which his inclusion is meant to be taken seriously. The whole game takes place in the figment of a kid's imagination. So it doesn't matter if Baymax acts a bit out of character here, as it's not the actual Baymax but what a kid imagines him to be. As with real life toys, if there's aseries a kid likes, there's rarely just one toy from that series. There's also several construction items in the base game and power discs dedicated to it. San Fransokyo is a track in the Toy Box Speedway game in 3.0. He is playable in both games, and they are good. Baymax's inclusion is good, faithful, and the way it's depicted here matches the whole "toy" concept. If you want to play the one with the most content, i'd recommend 3.0. You can still find the figures, base, the game itself, and the various power discs on eBay. If you don't want to seek out a bunch of physical stuff to unlock a full game, I don't blame you. Most people didn't. That and the prices are the main reasons that the genre eventually died out. The 2.0 and 3.0 gold editions do exist on steam with all the stuff in it, but if you're like me and have reservations about giving Disney money, then I'm sure there's ways to recreate or emulate the experience of playing it in your imagination. That's what the series is about after all, creativity. This is the only decent game I could find with a playable Baymax. There is one other decent game where he's featured as an NPC.
His Non-Threatening, Huggable, Simple and Clean Design
Kingdom Hearts III is an Action JRPG revolving around a character named Sora. It's a crossover featuring characters from Disney, Pixar, Final Fantasy, and The World Ends with You . It sounds out there when you hear it, but it works somehow, they merge them really well. It exists in a separate continuity from the Disney movies and the Final Fantasy Games. I won't go too into detail in the story cause there'll be spoilers and it's extremely confusing. The main premise of this game is a hero named Sora uses a weapon called a Keyblade along with Donald and Goofy to fight Heartless and stop a villain named Xehanort. Donald and Goofy are your NPC companions throughout most of the series, but if you visit one of the Disney worlds, you can swap them out with a character from that world. Despite it's name, it's actually the 11th game in the series. There are several other games from not just the main series, but also the spinoff that you need to play to understand the story of this game. So, even though Baymax is ONLY in 3, I'm just gonna recommend the whole series. They're genuinely great games with a nice vibe that somehow fuses the worlds of Disney and Final Fantasy, and if you go straight into 3, you'll just be extremely confused. Even if you play all the games in the series, you'll still be somewhat confused, but not as much as jumping into III. At the end of the post, i'll have a link to a list of all the games in the series. Baymax debuted as a "Friend" NPC along with the release of Kingdom Hearts in January 2019 (it was released on different days in different countries).
I haven't played KH3. I'm just getting into the first game in the series. But from the trailers (i'm trying to avoid spoilers) and his abilities in the wiki, his gameplay seems very faithful to the movie. Baymax's main Team Attack is the Interceptor Wing, where Sora gets on his back and he can then fly around and attack people. He is a very offensive person with several of his attacks involving Karate, but he's also a great healer. The only downside is that he moves a bit slowly. His attacks and his heal ability seem to capture everything about his personality from the movie. I've heard some good things about the San Fransokyo world as a whole so I'd recommend this game as well as the rest of the series, not just for a faithful video game representation of Baymax, but for a good series of games with fun gameplay and a heartfelt story.
