I had a nightmare last night.
There was this vast cosmic horror pursuing me and it was inescapable. It was and amalgam made up of all the beings it had previously absorbed and wanted to consume my whole life, erasing me from existence and swallowing me up into itself until I was nothing. I knew I couldn’t actually get away but I kept trying even though I knew I was inevitably going to die in the most profound sense of the word because no one would even remember I had been.
The terror started to pull me up from sleep and as I started waking up a little I tried to twist the narrative.
The being had its hooks in me and was starting to pull me apart but it also felt my fear and pain and desperation and it had absorbed some of my empathy as it tried to merge with me. It was experiencing pity for the first time, teetering between continuing as it always had or showing mercy.
In the tense moment of indecision I woke up.
