Rex leaned forward a little, elbow resting on his knee. “You ever had a girlfriend?” he asked, tone light but his eyes watching closely.
Ben exhaled through his nose, a crooked smile forming. “Couple,” he said. “There was this one chick… wild, Asian, name was Julie. Loved smashing things and had a swing that could shatter a truck. Kind of a firecracker.”
Rex chuckled. “Sounds like a handful.”
“She was. Said I didn’t give her enough attention. Dumped me for some French photographer dude. Personally? Thought she was too clingy.”
“There was this Kraaho girl named Ester. I staged a coup in her clan just to prove I was worth her time.”
“Yeah, until she cheated on me with some ugly looking troll that used to date Sunny named Antonio.”
Ben shrugged. “Whatever. Her hands were too hot anyway.”
Rex leaned back again, lips quirking upward in a knowing grin. The shadows from the fading sun cut across his sharp features, making his eyes gleam gold.
Then he leaned just a bit closer, voice low—almost a whisper laced with something darker. “Ever had a boyfriend?”
Ben looked at him sidelong, smirk curling his mouth. “Nope.”
Rex tilted his head. “Would you like to know what it’s like?”
He just looked at Rex. And then, without a word, closed the space between them.
