āIām not your property.āĀ
āProvidence has been watching you,ā Agent Six continued. āThis isnāt a confrontation. Itās a request.ā
Ben scoffed. āGreat. Creepy men in suits always say itās not a confrontation right before the guns come out.ā
Six ignored him. āWe need you back, Rex. Youāve seen the rise in EVO outbreaks. Youāve seen whatās coming.ā
Rex clenched his fists. āIām not your property.ā
āYouāre not. But you are the only known cure.ā
Ben moved slightly closer, arms crossed, planting himself just off Rexās shoulder. He didnāt say anything, but the intent was clear: back off, this oneās mine.
Rex took a slow breath.
āIām not going back,ā he said, voice firm. āNot to you. Not to Providence. I made my choice.ā
Six nodded once, like he expected that.
āYouāve changed,ā he said. āBut the world hasnāt. Weāll be in touch.ā
And with that, the two armored soldiers turned with him and walked offāno fight, no threat. Just quiet pressure, like the weight of a chain being placed on a table. As the group vanished into the trees, Ben exhaled.
āWell,ā he said. āThat was dramatic.ā
Rex sat back down, not meeting his eyes.
Ben waited a beat. āYou okay?ā
Rex shrugged. āI donāt know.ā
Ben was silent a moment. Then he offered the rest of his energy drink. āWanna drink poison and pretend nothing happened?ā
Rex took it without looking and drank. āThanks.ā
