Origin & Description: Traveler's Chosen is the first weapon you receive in Destiny 2 and it may be the last.
When your Guardian flies in to the Last City at the beginning of Destiny 2, your loadout is fixed: a set of parade armor, the Last City Ghost shell, and a single 100-Light sidearm named Traveler's Chosen. Canon explains this as preparation for a celebration planned in the City that day, and since we were going to be around the quote-unquote "normal people" most Guardians donned clean ceremonial armor and left all but the most minimal weaponry back in the Tower - where it was immediately confiscated, stomped-on, or confiscated then stomped-on by the Cabal as the Red Legion hit the City. After Ghaul severs the Light you wake up in the City's ruins and wander searching for your Ghost, clutching the now-charred and empty sidearm like a security blanket. You pick up more weapons as you make your way to Hawthorne's camp, then better ones at the Farm, then better ones out in the field, and so on up the Destiny power grind...but if you're a sentimental bastard like me, maybe you still have sitting in the corner of your Vault a kinetic sidearm locked to 10 light named Traveler's Chosen (Damaged).
Now here as we stare down the barrel of pyramidal doom, an unexpected weapon returns. After completing the four Evacuation quests to get people off the four destinations (Io, Titan, Mercury, and Mars) the Pyramids now hover above, we return to Zavala with mixed news: Ana Bray is returning with the recovered core of Rasputin (who dodged what seemed like certain death by hiding in the network equivalent of an airduct for three months), but Brother Vance on Mercury, Commander Sloane on Titan, and Asher Mir won't be coming back. Each plans to stand and fight the Pyramids their own way. Zavala accepts this news without much reaction; at this point the poor bastard's absorbed so much bad news that it barely registers. Silently he hands you a Traveler's Chosen - not new but repaired, with the marks of use and a few gashes in its sides through which the Light shines out. With each kill the internal glow brightens to near-blinding and you acquire stacks of Gathering Light. Keep those stacks to increase the weapon's reload speed, handling, and aim until you drain them all into yourself to recharge your abilities.
The Darkness is here and the Traveler is silent. When it woke to break its chains and burn away Ghaul we thought it was a new era, a resurrection that might see it return to taking an active role in guiding the Guardians. But it hasn't. It didn't move to stop the Almighty. It didn't stop the Darkness from destroying Rasputin. And even now as Darkness speaks, the Traveler is silent. The powers we once relied on to make sure the world ran all right - to make sure it would all be okay in the end, that things would never truly fall apart - are gone. All we have left is our faith.
