welcome to Ashwood, Vermont

Ashwood, VT was founded in 1792 by Edmund Ashwood, a landowner that came from old wealth. Drawn to the quiet untouched forest as the base of what is now known as the Ashwood River, Edmund uprooted his family along with others he had convinced with the promise of cheap land if they would help settle this new town. First amongst these families were the Quinn’s, a hardworking and ambitious lot who were trying to escape the family debt anyway they knew how. It didn’t take long for the Ashwood’s to fund the entire town, from the first school to the mill, Edmund Ashwood had secured himself as the town leader and head of the city’s council. 

But power, as it often does, bred resentment.

Samuel Quinn, in exchange for helping Ashwood cultivate his fields for wheat, used his own fields for corn and rye, building his own distillery on the outskirts of town. It didn’t take long for Quinn to gain popularity among the townsfolk helping grow the community by working alongside his neighbors, unlike Ashwood who lacked that connection. Quinn and his family soon became equals in both town rank and finances. Blackthorn Bourbon had become a staple to the town even to this day. 

The Harvest Festival of 1821 was the celebration of Ashwood's largest harvest and prosperity of the new community. Edmund Ashwood had made sure that this was the grandest festival to date, but would soon take a tragic turn. John Ashwood, heir to the town, had been seen walking away towards the lake just after midnight. His body had been found the next day amongst the reeds, a lantern floating beside him. With no signs of a struggle, his death was ruled accidental. Each family blamed the others, townsfolk said it was rumored that he had been secretly meeting with Elizabeth Quinn, the youngest of Samuel Quinn’s daughters. The rift grew with each whisper, the scandal putting a dent in the Ashwood family name. 

Ever since, the Ashwoods have been plagued by tragedy accusing the Quinn’s behind closed doors. While nothing was proven, Samuel Quinn’s rise to political success never sat well with some of the townsfolk. By the next year, Edmund Ashwood was replaced as mayor, and the whispers of a family curse took root that followed them for the next two hundred years.

The death of John Ashwood remains the town’s greatest unsolved mystery. Three generations later, the Quinn family is still the most respected name in Ashwood, having held the mayor’s office for over a century. While the Ashwoods still hold on to the little prestige they have left as the first founding family. 

Today Ashwood’s death is spoken in hushed whispers, the myth told to tourists and townies alike. Legend says at the annual harvest festival at just the right time, you can see John’s ghost floating amongst the reeds.

he grew up in a family very focused on perfection and success and he’s kind of closed off and bitter because of it

we finally open tomorrow and we’re so excited to meet & plot with everyone!!!! we hope everyone else is as well!
