I am not a wretch, though. Women who look different aren't ruined women. To see ourselves as ruined on the basis of how testosterone and surgery changed our bodies is to reveal the extent to which we hold ourselves to woman-hating definitions of what femaleness is. Being a woman does not mean I exist to be looked at and have my appearance evaluated, and it does not mean I have to exist to have children. I picked up the cuckoo's calling a week ago, of course partly because of her opinions now and the knowledge that's impacted the later Strike-books, but honestly it was mostly just on a whim. I am so so happy I did because I'm really enjoying it! Can't put it down! I've read a lot of heavy books lately and it is so nice to have a plot driven, easy, but well written book to enjoy! I was a massive potterkid, but grew a bit out of it in my late teens - but I am intrigued to see how she writes for adults!
