Hello Lovely, I meant to say this to you ages ago but I forgot, so here it is. I'd never heard of Into the Woods before following you, but through you I discovered 'No one is alone' and it has become somewhat of a constant in my life. Something about it just soothes me and the song feels like someone is holding me so gently. And it always makes me think of you of course! I think I just wanted to thank you for bringing something so meaningful into my life xxx
you know, I think I had a discussion about this with Polina once, but there’s such a unique importance to “No One is Alone” in the expanse of Sondheim’s work. obviously, there are songs of his that are perhaps more well-known or more ‘critically’ acclaimed, and there are songs that have different tiers of significance subjectively, whether it be for specific emotional reasons within a show itself, or reasons that transcend the story (I could make a whole playlist of the ones that connect to my mind/soul personally, and immediately I know others would say, “but what about!” and name a song connected to theirs). but, imho, he achieved something uniquely beautiful in “No One is Alone” because of how universal the message is, and how it manages to be hopeful without losing its honesty. in the hands of a less adept composer, the sincerity of the theme could turn insipid, but Sondheim doesn’t allow for that - there’s so much life in the song. the hope is real because the sorrow is, too. sometimes, people are going to leave you, or sometimes you’ll lose them, halfway through the journey, before you’re ready to let them go. sometimes, they’re going to hurt you, and they won’t be the only ones. and sometimes, the people you never expected to understand or accept are the ones who will join you along your path and help reveal who you are. it’s all up to you, where to go, how to respond to it (you decide what’s right, you decide what’s good), but no matter what, there is someone, somewhere on your side, someone who loves you, someone who will still be willing to walk alongside you when the woods get dark, someone who will remind you that you have an inner strength that can never be taken away. the song allows for both grief and healing, and I’m always, always grateful to it for that. Hard to see the light now, just don’t let it go.
Mandy Patinkin once said (in a quote about Sondheim) that artists, “feel the more painful aspects of life and set about to help it, heal it, turn dark into light,” and “No One is Alone” is so exemplary of that. it’s like a prayer I keep in my pocket, and turn to when I need reason to believe.
I didn’t mean for this to turn into an essay, I just wanted to express how very glad I am that you told this to me, and that the song has become a comfort and constant in your life, because it’s such a meaningful song to me, and it always touches my heart to know that it has resonated and stayed close to someone else. ♥♥♥
