Surrealism

In fashion, its really important for creatives to be able to view art and see how they connect, and translate these into garments. One of the more interesting artist movement’s that has made its appearance in fashion was that of surrealism. Like many art movements its ideas are deeply rooted in intellectual ideas of the time. Andre Breton was the first to create the concept of surrealism with his first writing the, ‘The Surrealist Manifesto’. The movement was established after the french had lost the first world war and many associated their loss on the excesses of the bourgeois.

Some of the most prominent artists of the movement are Frieda Khalo, Salvador Dhali and Sebastian Bienek. In fashion the most prominent surrealist designer would be Elsa Schiaparelli, whose garments and jewellery were at the forefront of obscurity and strangeness for her time.Her clothes helped move fashion into the art it is now, by juxtaposing peoples perception of how clothing should be. To the modern viewer her clothes may still hold values of the past, but it cannot be denied that at the time her works were created they were at the leading power in moving fashion out of convention and further into art and beauty. 

 Most of the art in this movement aimed to displace the watchers perception, ideas put together, making sense in the obscurest of ways. The works of Salvador Dhali perhaps have this effect on me the most, they leave me intrigued with thoughts provoked. If one thinks about it closely this is one movement which has held itself firm in art since its conception. Whether it be through art of fashion, the concepts of juxtaposition, confusion and obscurity are big forces within the creativity.

Mythical Galaxy, Portfolio development

12/5/14 Further development of my portfolio was needed and the next project to tackle was the digital fashion unit, this unit had involved a lot of development on the computer systems including the use of the Lectra suite to create our patterns and Photoshop to develop our print. My theme was Disney and I development mood boards, from that took images from my surrounds and work in the dye room to create a interesting almost galaxy like print on Photoshop. I kept my layout simple and clean for this project as it involves a lot of colour and busy prints, unfortunately after printing I've come to realise that my chosen background doesn't print the way it looks on the computer as it loses its textured effect, may have to change that.

1700 -1750 Era Assignment

This term we were split into groups and given an era, ours being 1700-1750.

As I began my background research it became clear that although I hadn't knowingly looked at the time before now, inspiration had been taken and the results were everywhere. Large ruffled sleeves, extravagant collars, peplum tops and large skirts are used by all sorts of designers. I hadn't even thought of where these ideas could be coming from!

This floral print princess dress is part of Elie Saab's Haute Couture S/S collection. As you can see the dress is tight at the top, especially the waist much like the stays and stomachers of the 1700's. The skirt extends right out, again, much like the skirts and dresses of the time. 

  This corset is by Vivienne Westwood. Printed with Francois Boucher, Daphnis and Chloe from the portrait collection. Looking at designers who had taken their inspiration from the era, this particularly jumped out at me as being similar to the stays and stomachers women wore.

All in all, I've found it really interesting researching the background to the fashions we see today and actually being able to spot items in shops with elements taken from history.
