"Pillion - which follows the love story between dom biker Ray (Alexander Skarsgård) and his sub Colin (Harry Melling) - received nominations for Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, and Adapted Screenplay at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards.
If Pillion were to win either of the latter two categories, the award would go to out-Gay director Harry Lighton, who made his feature debut with the film. Pillion is based on Box Hill, the novel by Adam Mars-Jones. Lighton is also named in the Outstanding British Film category alongside producers Emma Norton, Lee Groombridge, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe.
At the film’s gala screening, Melling, Lighton and Skarsgård were joined by members of a Gay biker motorcycle club, reflecting the film’s close relationship with Queer subculture.
Elsewhere, Sound recognition went to Warfare, which stars Heartstopper’s Kit Connor among its ensemble cast. Ethan Hawke also earned a Leading Actor nomination for his portrayal of lyricist Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon. Hart is widely reported to have been Gay, despite proposing marriage to women during his lifetime.
Queer filmmaker Adrian Molina received a nomination in the Animated Film category for Pixar’s Elio. Following the film’s release, reports suggested that the titular character was originally written as explicitly “queer-coded”, with elements later softened.
Taken together, the nominations may help counter long-standing criticism of major awards bodies as being, in the words of detractors, “Oscars so straight”."
