I like the idea of DnD items… actually putting them to use is another story
“I WILL DEVOUR YOUR ENTRAILS!”
Me, designing NPCs: “How bout an evil bag.”
This Sapient Evil Bag Of Devouring has been offered by a trader for a large amount of negative money. The players love it already.
(Day #273)
Inside the Bag of Devouring
I gave my players a bag of devouring. I felt like I had given them ample reason to worry about it - it was in a chest that was not just locked but chained shut, even though logically someone should have been making use of it. But no, they trusted that it was a Bag of Holding and once the adventure was over they started to load things into it. The problem is that with a Bag of Devouring every time you reach into the little fucker there’s a 50% chance it will suck you in. You can try to climb out at a DC 15, someone else can try to pull you out at DC 20, but otherwise you’re screwed. Honestly if I had really read the rules for it I wouldn’t have given it to them because I dislike “save or die” stuff. But by the time I realized it was too late.
They put several things in there, and as they did so I had them rolling percentile. The Bard was the one loading it up and the player didn’t seem to be aware of what was going on, but the other players were giggling like crazy because they ABSOLUTELY knew there was only one reason for that roll and were fucking giddy with anticipation.
Eventually the Bard was yanked out of sight and failed his STR check to pull himself out.
The Cleric ran over and tried to help the Bard, but failed his STR check. Then he rolled under 50%. Nom.
The Fighter ran over and tried to help the Cleric, but failed his STR check. Then he rolled under 50%. Nom.
The Monk ran over and tried to help the Fighter, but failed his STR check. Then he rolled under 50%. Nom.
At this point it SHOULD be a TPK. The rules are pretty clear about it. But there’s no way I’m going to let them go out like this, so instead the next game is going to start with them being barely saved by some Githyanki that happened to be in the middle of butchering the extraplanar beast the Bag of Devouring acts as a mouth for.
