Thorin and Bilbo are enjoying Elevenses after gathering a bundle of apples, it was a good harvest. Perfect for snacking and enjoying their time together.
They weren't meant to be alone. There was an appointment in Balin's diary that he was not going to make.
Instead, Thorin Oakenshield stood just within Bilbo Baggins' doorway in the middle of the night and stared down at the creature before him. Nothing moved but the crackling fire.
"I hope I'm not disturbing you," Thorin whispered. He reached behind himself to close the door.
Bilbo didn't step back as Thorin stepped closer. "Well, I was in the middle of something. But I'm sure I can be tempted away if it's really important."
"It is."
"I suppose you had better come in then."
Neither moved a muscle until Thorin seemed to remember himself and produced a velvet-wrapped box.
"This is for you. There are… there is something I need to say first, before you open it."
Bilbo only watched him with steady attention.
"With this gift, I make us both ready. Whether we now wed is your choice and yours alone." He cleared his throat. "It sounds a little better in Khuzdul."
"I see. This is your catch-em-something then?"
"The abkân khajam. Yes."
The hobbit took the little parcel and wasted no time to open it. He laughed to see four well-shaped knives, all polished to an incredible shine.
"Thorin! This is mithril."
He set his shoulders back a little. "Yes. You are a quick study of gems and metals."
"I don't think so. Only, it's all anyone wants to talk about whenever I wear mithril about in the mountain."
He lifted a knife to see it better. Its heft made him smile.
"Heavy," he said, recalling the night they were engaged.
"Do you like them?" The king's face thus far had not cracked from its stoic mask.
"Thorin. They're lovely. I won't insult you by saying I would have married you for a copper coin, but you must know I will have you."
Thorin frowned and tucked a piece of hair behind Bilbo's ear. "You deserve far more than this, far more than what is traditional. I would shower you in precious gems if that were what you wanted." The line of his mouth ticked upward. "If you but say the word, I will travel to the far reaches of Arda to find you an armchair to rest your feet."
Bilbo blushed then. "Romantic old sop." He rummaged in his pocket and held out a closed fist. "I've something for you as well."
"Bilbo, you needn't--"
"No, but I shall."
Taking Thorin's hand, he pulled his fingers open and placed a small, well-worn ring into his palm.
"It is a copy of my father's ring, forged here in Erebor," he said. "And now it is yours. If you wear this, any hobbit who looks upon you will know you are a married dwarf."
The dwarf let out a disbelieving breath.
"So then…" Bilbo trailed off and inconspicuously consulted a piece of paper from his pocket. "I believe you owe me a braid or two."
Together they sat near the fire while Thorin twisted a complex plait into Bilbo's hair. He hadn't brought the beads, which were still in Balin's possession. He'd find him in the morning, apologize for going along without him, and take them then. He used a bead from his own hair in the meantime. He liked the way it stayed warm as it passed between them-- heat from one heart to another.
The peace was interrupted as he tied off the knot. A furious Dis swept into the room and began at once to berate them. Thorin, remembering his sister's advice to 'do as he liked' in regard to their courtship, opened his mouth to retaliate. He was stopped when a soft hand slid into his own and gripped his palm. He stood there, hearing not a syllable of his sister's speech, and was undone by the feeling of Bilbo's hand in his.

With Smaug not far from the distance, chasing the theiving Dwarrows and one Barrel-rider, Thorin does his best to protect Bilbo from the harsh winds of a winged beast. Wishing he had done better to protect his company. His burglar.
Bilbo and Thorin rest their heads gently. Finally they are together at last. Throughout all their hardships they finally made it. Official only in braid for now, a sign of a promise to never stray afar from one another. Hope will carry them into the future.
Thorin had cut his hand while helping bilbo in the kitchen. Bilbo held onto it with a towel, soaking up the blood and preventing it from dripping. For a quiet moment, they stood there together. Bilbo in that moment wished more than ever he could do more than just hold his hand. To close this gap of unfamiliarity between them and expel this awkwardness. To be closer. Thorin too wanted more than this. Hands being held by Bilbo wasn’t enough- he wants to get closer. But the fear of misjudgment stopped him. It was just a friendly touch he thought. Nothing more.
A celebration feast has started for the reclaimed lonely mountain. Thorin is sitting at the head of the table, refusing to even glance at Bilbo, ashamed of his actions of his sickness. Whilst Bilbo is looking back at him, yearning to speak to him.
